Gonna bet you're on Propane.

Mine wanted full throttle and full choke. Little primer button on the side of the fuel pump/vaporizer. Once the engine is rolling over. hold that button down till it hits.

As soon as it lights off, get the choke off and rpm's down to 1000ish. Let her sit for a couple minutes to get things lubed up and stabilized. The rock the steering trick would help too but you just ran outta hands (one on button, one on key).

I really liked the LP for winter starting as once you had the process down, it was a very reliable starter.

Same starting process in the warmer periods. Just didn't use the liquid prime.

Mark

WACO, This is an ol trick I learned on JD LPs a looong time ago. I am sure you cut the Liquid & Vapor valves off after you use it. Even at lunch!
Now.....While cranking the engine, open the vapor,...Now take your free hand, and osolate the steering wheel back and forth about 1/4 turn, rapidly! She should start! I not sure why it works exactly, but I have never seen it not work on those old Deeres. This trick should eliminate the need for ether in all but the dead of winter here in Cen-Texas.
What it does is releave the hydrolic pressure when cranking I think. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Rocking the wheel takes the pressure off the hyd pump which reduces the load on the engine while attempting to start.

Sounds like you may need to check the primer button/system which feeds a vapor mixture for cranking before the regular carburetion system begins to feed the engine.

W.G.D.,I do not know about butane but we have had L.P. cars and trucks, the only way to start them in the winter was on gas then switch over to L.P.

Are you starting and stopping it by the methods in the 4020 manual?

I have noticed that in cold weather, I am not able to ignite my weed burner torches with an flint type torch igniter. Only an open flame will produce ignition.
