My JD 1984 850 has approximately 900 hrs on it. It starts easy, runs great, seems to have lots of power etc. However, it has a fairly loud knock which is most noticeable at idle. It also smokes a bit -- appears to be white smoke with MAYBE a touch of blue. Every few seconds it appears to puff out more smoke than usual, and I think it also makes a very light bump sound when it puffs the smoke. There is no water in the oil, no gas bubbles in the radiator. It has new injectors. Any ideas on what I should look for? Thanks

Scott

Has anyone has disturbed the injection pump on the shim pack that holds it to the engine? The shims control the injector delivery rate and timing. I have a 650 diesel and when I had my injectors and pump serviced there was a long process to time them by a drip method to get them calibrated correctly. Might be necessary to have your JD dealer to check timing or if not JD dealer then a shop familiar with the Yanmar engines. You definetly need a manual for the procedure. Gene Davis

Don't know what you've been doing with it but I'd put some Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel and give it time to get into the system then take it out and workhell outta it. Sounds like it is suffering from being babied.

Like when we had cars that ran at 30 mph in the city all week. By weeks end they ran horrible. Took them out on the interstate, put her in second gear and rad it up. By the 3rd or 4th time (had to slow back down to stay within speed limit) she was purrin like a kitten.

I think the whisps are wads of crud in your combustion chamber braking loose and coming out. The white smoke is water vapor from low cylinder temperature.

Check to see if you are getting diesel in your oil.

Thanks for all the responses. I do not know if the injection pump timing is off. I guess I may have to have this checked out.

I do not have diesel fuel in the oil.
I do not see any water in the oil.
However, I may have some oil in the radiator overflow bottle. There seems to be a substance in there, not sure what it is.

Any ideas??

Once again thanks - you guys are great.
Scott
