I would say you are overdue for a new mower. 8hp don't seem like much now days anyhow. I know someone who just bought a new 18hp troybuilt with automatic tranny from Lowes (someone had bought and brought it back.) for $800. Sounds better than just an engine to me.

Scratched cyliner/not bored? Big 'Maybe' -a ball hone MAY clean up scratches without going over piston/cylinder clearance specifications. Knurled piston skirt and +.005 service rings if available might put the engine back in service. Slightly oversize rings used to to available(late 70s) for SOME Kohler and a few Brigges&Scrapiron models when I was working in small engine supply shop. If lower end still OK or minimal repairable, repairs are possible maybe 1/2 the time. Running low/out of oil is not good for engines, does make for short block and engine sales- old engines given to school shops as training aids were sometimes repaired this way and ran mowers, tillers, scooters. No Warrantee, good training, minimal complaints. RN.

At a cost in the order of $800 a Short Block can be installed... that's all that can be done in lieu of purchasing a completely new motor.

If you are looking at 800.00 for a short block, you can buy a complete new engine for half of that!!!

Must be one of those offshore OHV engines. Throw it in the trash and get a Kohler.
