OK, I have an old Ford 550 TLB Diesel. I started it up last week no problem. At that time the temperature outside was around 25 degrees F. I used it for about 1 hour. It was sitting outside for the past week-average temperature 20 degrees F to 32 degrees F. Today, it was 20 degrees F outside, I go outside, try to crank the motor, and everything is completely dead. I mean, the starter doesn't make a sound. Very strange. I checked my battery with a multimeter- it reads 12.42 volts. I brought the battery inside to give it a trickle charge on my charger, but I can't figure this one out. Would anyone have any ideas?? Help!!!! Thanks.

Andrew

Does your tractor have the solenoid mounted on the starter? If it is the type that also moves the starter drive into the flywheel ring gear, one drop of water frozen on the solenoid plunger will cause a totally silent no start condition. A hair dryer or other heat source on the solenoid will get it freed up in a few minutes. My stuff equipped with Delco starters is great for this problem.

Put the tractor in neutral after you have installed the battery. Short the solenoid (with a screwdriver) to engage the starter. If the starter turns, you probably have a problem with the switch or switch wiring. If the starter does not turn, it could be the battery, battery terminals, cables, solenoid or starter.Try jump starting to see if the battery is ok. If it still does not start, check each component
mentioned above.

Couple of things. Moisture from these cold damp mornings could be attacking your electrical system. I'd start with the ignition switch first and work your way thru the solenoid energizing loop.

Suggest that is where to look first as you said dead. If it were in the high current loop, you would at least hear the starter solenoid close (click) when you pushed the start button or turned the key to that position.

12.42 on a cold day is probably full charge. At 75 F 12.75 is full and the capacity drops with temp.
