I put 2 1/2 gallons of antifreeze mix into the
fuel tank on my 4020 D Tractor by mistake. I
sure wasn"t thinking at the time!! It ran only
a minute or two before it stopped. What should
I do to correct my mistake? Any and all help
would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

We did the same on a 4450,5 gals.Antifreeze seperates from fuel real well.Drained tank till just fuel came out(got almost exactly 5 gals),didn't have filters on hand so dumped them out,Hand primed till we got fuel, fired right up.Lucky? Figured it would at least trash injector tips. That was 18-20 years ago,low hrs (new).Still running fine, haven't worked on it.

Can't add to the fix thing, but is the cap on the diesel RED? Went to buy a replacement for mine and the JD clerk put a RED cap on the counter. Said I wasn't going to put that RED cap on my GREEN tractor. Clerk said JD's been doing it for 35 yrs. Guess you know why; as do I.

there is a timing window plate on the side of the pump.take the plate off.fuel or antifreeze will drain from the pump.antifreeze will require a complete cleaning of the pump,or rebuild.

If you only ran it a minute or two, check to see if there is antifreeze in the sediment bowl on the fuel pump if it has a bowl. Then check the fuel filters before you get carried away with taking the pump off.If there is any in the fuel filters, it will come out the bottom plug hole. Then take the fitting out of the inlet line to the injection pump from the fuel filters. It takes a 3/4" wrench. There is a very fine screen on the transfer pump regulating valve(on 3/4" fitting assy) that would probably plug before you could suck any antifreeze through it.The screen can be firmly grasped and twisted loose. If there is any antifreeze inside the screen then I would remove the pump and have it checked at a authorized service center. There are cavities very few people even know about in those pumps. If you have never pressed a pump head apart, you would never know about them. The experts can tell you how to proceed from there.
I would not only drain the tank,I would also remove the fuel gauge sender and swab the tank out with a rag on a long rod after flushing the tank out with water. If its any consolation, you are not the first one to do this.

probability is you will have to replace the pump.usually the antifreeze or water will cause dramatically fast cooling of the pump housing and the pump siezes and breaks the pump drive shaft.when you take the pump off to clean it,you will see if the shaft is broken.

Drain the fuel tank, Take fuel filters off Blow air through fule lines from tank to fuel pump, clear line from fuel pump to fuel filters, clear line from fuel filters to injector pump. At this point I'd have to call a diesel Mech and ask but am sure you will have to remove the injector pump and get it cleaned out. Remove and clean injector lines then remove and have injectors cleaned. Reverse directions for putting things back together plus you will have to bleed injector lines before it will start. This is a mistake you only make once.
