Hi, i was just wondering how to wire 2 12 volt batteries together and still have 12 volts. Cold weather is here and tractor is getting hard to start. The battery thats in it isnt big enough but we have another battery about the same size that fits in the battery box along with the other one. Any help is appreciated, Steve

There was a huge discussion on this several years ago on this board- I had been using one 12 volt on my Oliver 550 diesel, and decided to try 2 six volt in series. I didn't see much difference at the time, and now I have to "get lucky" to start it. I'm going back to the biggest 12 volt that I can stuff in the box, next time.

I'd go with one really big battery like a 1200cca.

2 6 volt batteries in series will give you more starting power thatn 2 12 volt batteries in parell. Yea the cca's might be the same but one bad/poor parell connection will drop it to one and a bad serial connection will give you nothing.

One really big 12 volt will give you more with out the terminal corrosion problems.

To stay with 12 volts, just wire them in parallel. that is tie the + posts together and the - posts together.

If you try to tie an unmatched pair of batteries together in parallel, and one is weaker than the other, they will drag themselves down, and self discharge. Battery life will be very short. If you do parallel a pair of batteries, be sure to start with a new matched pair, and they will grow old together gracefully. GM did this on their diesel cars and light trucks. I've had a couple, and have confirmed the battery concept several times. Have one in the garage right now.

I think the correct statement is that the "system" will stabilize to the value of the weakest battery. Now if your weakest battery is "dead" then the system will stabilize dead.

I don't see how a good battery can "kill" a marginal battery; but the converse is true to the point of equal voltage; not necessarily equal specific gravity.

A good battery will not kill a weak battery.
The charging system kills the good battery.
If you have a good and a weak battery in the system, the voltage will be low, the regulator will recognize this and attempt to charge it up. Since the good battery is already fully charged, the additional electron flow is turned to heat. The good battery cannot accept and store any more electrical energy so the battery "boils" its electrolyte. This is how a marginal battery "kills" a "good" battery. The same thing will happen if you connect a 12 V load in the middle of a 24 V set. You over charge the battery that is not connected to the 12 V load. John Deere tried to balance the 12 v lighting load on their 24 V 4020 diesel? It wasn't too sucessful.

Ray: You are correct, always install two new batteries in a two battery system at same time. Doesn't matter whether they be 6 volt in series or 12 volt paralell. As these batteries go down you will always have one battery with some use left in it. Use that battery in a single battery system elsewhere.

I ran my Farmall 300 as much as 3 years on the one good battery coming out of 560 or 656 diesels ( 2-6 volt in series). Did the same thing with 2-12 coming from John Deere and 6.2 Chevy. Used those in my car.

This is true. Most of us up here in the north toss out the 2-battery factory setups & get one bigger battery. Much more dependable.
