Hello all, this isn't a tractor but I have seen many of you mention using army trucks on your farms so here goes.A friend of mine recently bought a 6x6 army truck to haul logs. The fuel cap and the salesman say it will burn diesel, gasoline or kerosene with no adjustments or changes. Is this true and if so, how can the same engine, same compression and same form of ignition burn all three?? I'm not a trained mechanic but usually work on anything I tackle and understand it pretty well. This sounds to strange.

Thanks.

i have been interested in maybe getting a tractor semi tractor that is from the military if i could find one priced right just to pull grain from field to and field to elevator. first question is does anyone know a good semi tractor model. maybe a 6x6 as sumties it can get wet esp this year and some corn to finish. second is where is a good place to get one of these pices of equipment in northern illinois or where is a good internet site. i know they are probably geared pretty low but speed inst a great concern. how hard is it to get one of them trucks titled and registered? are many of them parts on their common as are powered by cummins or even though its cummins are they different then civilian cummins engines? thanks in advance

Hi JDMan01,

I run a deuce-and-a-half, my only "pickup". Mine was converted to diesel-only before it left the army. Top speed"s 60, 55 is better. Can"t imagine a better truck for my needs. I went to the closest base to see what was being auctioned. Didn"t know what I was looking at, parts missing, so I decided to buy from a dealer. My guy, in NC, uses an army road tractor pulling a trailer that holds 2 deuces to get his buys home. Deuces start at $4500 (ready to inspect) and he"s making a profit.

Titled and registered is no problem. Parts readily available and inexpensive from several places that specialize in such.

If you want to bypass a dealer, there are a few trucks in Illinois on page 4 here:

No doubt on NOT using gasoline in one. I was driving one to AT one summer and one of our resident rocket scientists topped me off with avgas. She rolled a blue blaze out of the stack about 15 seconds after starting her up, man was the first sgt pi--ed.

The multi-fuel engines use a specially designed combustion chamber as well as a "fuel density compensator" built into the injection pump. There is a relationship of btu's and viscosity of different fuels (thinner/lighter fuels have fewer btu's than thicker/heavier fuels for a given unit of measure). The density compensator simply adjusts the amount injected based on viscosity. Starting in the late '80's, most engines had the density compensators bypassed as the military phased out gasoline tactical vehicles, so I wouldn't recommend running anything other than diesel in one now. The chief complaint with civilian use of these trucks is the lack of power, they have less than stellar performance at highway speeds, but on unimproved roads in combat zones (where they were designed to operate) they have more than enough power. Sorry for being long winded!

Kero,or jet-a will work fine. Use Gasoline only if the enemy is breathing down your neck. Redmud:

The instructions for burning gasoline were, as I recall, to mix one quart of 30W motor oil with each 5 gallons of gasoline. I never saw it done. They are diesel engines.

You're talking about the military multi-fuel vehicles. Good ideal when you have supply problems but it didn't work very well. I told the moter officer in my motor fuel not to use anything but diesel and it eliminated maintance headaches. Stick to diesel, you will be better off.

Any idea how vegetible oil works in them? I've always wondered about getting the used oil from the local doughnut factory and running that after it was filtered several times.

The cooking oil works great. But all I ever used was new cooking oil. There are folks that filter used cooking oil and burn it in their diesel trucks. I burned Jet fuel in my 6.2 Chevy diesel for about 5 years, couldn't tell the difference in the way it ran.
