Ticks and other critters....

Hey guys, I've got a question that I'm hoping somebody out there can answer for me. I've got two dogs, one outdoors, and the other kind of a "Lassie" type that likes to run around outside during the day and then come in at night. All through the summer I found very few ticks or fleas on either dog, and never any in the house. Now that the cold weather has set in, and we've had at least two fair frosts (around 27 at night)I've found more ticks and fleas on both dogs than I did all summer. Needless to say the indoor/outdoor dog is out permanantly now to keep the fleas out of the house. Then today we went riding 4-wheelers in the woods behind the house and when we casme back in I found three ticks on my boy. In the past I can never remember ticks or fleas being this active this late in the year. Has anybody else noticed this in your area, and does anyone have any ideas/old wives tales/ or other "scientific" reasons why this might be happening??

Listen to Bob-- that Frontline stuff is great. We use it on the inside cats and the dogs when they need it. You can apply it to a flea-ridden cat and within a day or so every fleaon that cat will be dead. Very good stuff. Also supposed to work against ticks, though the results against ticks are less obvious to me, so I can"t really say.

We also sprayed our dogs" pen with insecticide to kill ticks. Laid it down prety heavy, and that seemed to work pretty well. "Course, you can"t exactly spray your entire "back 40" if you let your dog run.

Good luck,
Darren

West Michigan has had one of the biggest flea years in recent memory. Local vet. suggests using Frontline Plus on all animals to keep the critters at bay. Indoors is a different story and they are suggesting a product called mycodex. This is a spray that inhibits growth and breaks the life cycle of the little invaders. Both are available on-line a lot cheaper than buying from the vet. Mycodex is a spray that goes on the carpet and furniture and this stuff really works.

The only reason that I know this I have been working flea issues at the house for the past week or so. Had some imported by a visiting canine and we are not happy at all.

Be careful that you and your kids dont get lyme disease from ticks. The best way to prevent it is to wear bug repellant with deet. I have read that ticks can live without food for weeks. My friends mother in-law got lyme disease about a year ago, she is miserable. Only way to kill them and/or repel them is with insecticide.

your friends mother in law is miserable? is it from the lyme disease or is it just her nature?? I live next door to mine and never thought deet would keep her away, I'll have to give it a try! big grin

Never saw ticks this late.... Usually worst month for them is August. Only theory I can reckon is ... that as it gets colder, they seek warmth ( People & animals) Like Flies hover around window screens as weather gets colder. This has been an unusual year as far as weather goes. Bugs have eaten up my greens patch, never saw that happen before. It seems like we went from summer to winter. It sleeted a few miles up the road on Saturday.
