A VERY Very sharp pencil "FIRST." Second, a wife that will put up with the initial few years of struggle and loss of her husband while getting started and cultivating a reputable name. Then, All the things you mentioned. Good luck chasing your dream. I have caught mine. I am not trying to be funny with my recomendations either.

Dennis,

It is a great idea and I know how you feel about
wanting to do something you passionately enjoy.
I have some experience running a business, and one of the best pieces of advice I can give you
is to diversify. You can do this in many ways,
but the idea is to have ways of generating revenue
to back up other parts of your operation. For example, you could simply sell salvage parts on e-bay or start up a parts business. These
are the most obvious of ways and I am sure you can use your imagination. I am in no way an expert, but these days it takes a lot of creativity to stay in business.

Best of Luck and Happy Holidays,

Tim, OH

Dennis,

Are you the Dennis that sold a few AC tractors awhile back, a couple of D10's and a D17? Just wondering.

My son & I are working on plans for a 40x60 shop with individual rooms (or areas) that will be set up in a sequence so as to drag in a dead/ugly/rusty tractor at one end and at the other end, a restored beauty. The shop will have a 5 ton beam trolley running from one end to the other. At the teardown area, we'll have a smaller beam trolley & hoist setup for moving large chunks of iron into and out of the rebuild area. There'll be a body and paint area and a paint booth too--lighted and ventilated with filtered air. We'll be able to drive through the shop from one end to the other with our truck and gooseneck trailer to bring in a tractor and unload in bad weather without geting wet. (No snow down here--maybe once in ten years)

For now, all that is just a dream with some of the plans already drawn. Since the hurricane hit us we haven't even finished our smaller shop that was in work. For the next 8-12 months we're in the logging business clearing our property of downed trees and debris and repairing the house and fencelines. I wish you the best of luck on your project.

Two things that I consider valuable for any tractor repair service: (1) pickup & delivery - not everyone has the ability to trailer their tractor to the shop. If you could pick up the ailing tractor & then deliver it back when it's fixed, that would be great. (2) a field service unit. If you could make "house calls" there would be a great demand for that, I would think.

I think one could make a go of it if you don't limit yourself to tractors. I dont know the market in your area but people crash cars all the time every where. If you can do body work you can take in crashes to keep beans on the table while you build your business. I'm retired and love working on stuff, but I have neighbors bringing in more car and trucks then tractors. I figured if I started charging maybe it will slow down and I can get some of my own projects done. I don't buy this no jobs bit. I could get more work then I could handle if I wasn't lazy. But not just on tractors. A lot more cars break then tractors. They will allow you to get your enterprise started.

It would be nice if we all could work at No Charge, you are right, we would have all the work we could handle.
I’ve been there and I found it wouldn’t buy a can of beans or a gallon of diesel to get my tractor or truck to the “work for free” site. When I started to charge a little I was out of work.
I’m sure your little people tax is close to ours, as we seem to copy whatever works down there. Our local tax office is trying very hard “they say” to have a 0% tax increase for 2005, however with the inflated property values my taxes will go up about 30+%, and the school board is obviously very quiet, until we get our final assessment.

How will dennis in nc dream come true and stay in business if all retired trades people work for less than free? Oh I Almost forgot to mention our minimum wage went up 5% not bad, first time in 9 years, 1hours work minus tax plus $2.50 gets you a pack of smokes or plus and $28.00 a box of beer.
Lets all get to work and work for free. For everything else there is Visa.

Consider branching into small engines as well. It's amazing to me how many people are too lazy (or too stupid?) to even change the spark plug on a lawn mower or snow blower.

Hey Dennis, I think you named just about everything needed...and make each piece the best money can buy....The problem is that once you could afford all the equipment you'd never be able to afford to pay anybody that knows anything to work there...That is unless your that janitor from NY that just won, what was it, nearly 88 million dollars..... ....As for the shops already being out there, Dad and I do mainly the older cranes and heavy equipment, but we occasionally run across a farm tractor or three. If you'd see some of the jobs we've been asked to take on you'd know why we often joke about changing the name of the company from Harmon's Equipment Repair to Harmon's Equipment Resurrection Service. We each run a large field service truck, we have a small but adequate machine shop setup,(we farm out the really big stuff), a homemade welding buildup machine for doing shafts, rollers, sheeves, etc, a big sand blaster with a 185CFM compressor, a 75+ ton press, brake riveting tools for doing crane bands, along with a mess of other normal and special tools. The biggest problem is that no matter how many tools we get or how big the shop is none of it is ever enough. Good luck with the dream and if your ever in the Concord area look us up..... .Sorry,I didn't intend this to sound like plug for us, we stay covered in work and then some already, but proof reading it that's kinda how it sounded.....Heck on second thought call us we'll take all the work we can get...LOL

Wayne, after I win the lottery, I plan to build that shop, & I will give all the guys here a key....It is fun to think about winning... I would go to Blanchard Cat & buy one of this & one of that... But first, I need to win an auction for a Swench on Ebay...Twice, I have lost by one increment.... Regards, Davis

Hey Davis, sorry about the Swench's, I'll bet a buddy of mine took the last one from you. He saw mine awhile back and asked me to keep an eye out for him. I know he was bidding on a 1" and a 3/4" , that I had told him about, a week or so back. I haven't talked to him since but when I told him about them he didn't have a ebay name setup yet, so I don't know what he went with. I did see a day or so later though that both were won by the same bidder who only had two transactions showing.....SORRY....

Hi Wayne, All is fair in Ebay....I will get one someday... I found out they were once made at the plant in Fountain Inn SC. It has been closed for about 15 years. I bought some machinery from there when they were closing. By the way, were you the one that told the seller that Swench was not a Torque Amplifier ? Wording Sounded like you... Best Regards, Davis

....Yep, that was me, guilty as charged....I know most people don't know what they are, and wouldn't want somebody getting something they didn't have a clue what was, even if it wasn't from me..... .I've been told many times that I had a very recognizable voice, I never knew it was the same with my writing... Take care, Wayne

That was Marquette Metals, A division of Curtiss-Wright. I noticed one of the Swenches on Ebay was made there. At the time, I am not actively looking for any machinery, we have a shop full, & are out of room. Never know, might be interested , though. Feel free to Email me with what you have. Regards, Davis

Yep!I know the place, never knew what they did there, though.Sodetel moved in shortly afterwards but they have closed like a week or so ago.We are closing supposedly Dec. 31,but it looks like fortunely that may be extended until April or May.We make a chemical that is used in the antifreeze industry, not the antifreeze itself though. Also have a small packaging operation, just to help pay the bills.looks like we may go to straight packaging products after Zerex pulls out completely. Were going to try that then see what happens.

I would think one of the most important thing you would need is to develop sales literature to help convince our wives as to why spending that kind of money would be a good deal. Also a network that would help locate old tractor and parts. Then of course you would have to have a visitors day to let us come in and oh and ah all of your neat stuff. I can"t think of a thing that you haven"t already mentioned. It is a noble idea and one worth going for
