I would like to get an opinion, on which battery manufactuer has the best 6V battery
available for antique farm tractors. I'm not concerned about the price, just want a good quality battery.
Thanks for any replies

Ken no more than most people start and run these old tractors you would probley be better off to settle for a mid priced battery from Napa or any local battery builder. And why spend a lot of money for something that sits more than it runs

Optima. Paint/metal doesn't get ruined by acid fumes. They can be mounted in any position as well. Good enough to use in airplanes too.

I have a 6 volt Deka in my Farmall B that was installed in 1994. It is a plain old lead-acid battery. I'm still using it, but this is probably the last winter for it. It was only out for a few months in '97 to paint the battery box. I don't pull it out in the winter and the tractor sits in an unheated shed in S.E. PA. It does get cold around here, but rarely below 0deg F. It will get to single digits for only a few weeks at most.

There are only a few manufacturers that offer a 6 volt anymore, so I don't think you will have a wide selection to choose from.

I think that how you treat the battery will have more to do with it's life than who made it. I do not allow a battery to sit around discharged or even partially charged. I put the battery charger on it about every 6-8 weeks over the winter to keep it up. When I run the tractor, I check the ammeter to make sure the charging system is doing it's job. Temperature extremes are hard on batteries, and that effect seems to be multiplied on discharged batteries.
Just what seems to work for me, your results may vary.
Don't forget extra-heavy cables on a 6 volt system. It takes twice the amperage for a 6 volt starter to do the same work as a 12 volt. Keep your connections clean, bright and tight too.

Years ago there was a place that sold batterys in Michigan that when you decided if you wanted a 1 or 2 or 3 year gauranteed battery they would get the the approiate sticker and put it on the battery. Batterys were all the same, all you were buying was the guarantee.

Ken: I think you will find most suppliers of batteries have both cheapies and quality. I can't tell you about the rest but here in SW Ontario, NAPA is excellent on warrenty. I went to them with a battery bought in another province, warrenty had been lost and I had nothing more than bank debit slip showing where and when I bought it. About 10 min. and I walked out with a new battery, costing me very little. I call that service.

I might add I bought one at CaseIH with similar results. This battery I had bought for a tractor I was working on. It sat in my shop 3 weeks before being used. When I installed battery it was dead. I took it back, they checked it on a tester. They decided it was bad from factory, thus gave me a new one.

In both cases the replacments have been good batteries.

Years ago I always considered Canadian Tire had the best 6 volt battery, they may still have the best 6 volt battery. I just don't enjoy standing around their store all day to buy one small item. To me shopping at Canadian Tire, you start to look for your bedroom, as you begin to think you must have moved in.

The majority of batteries are made by just a few manufacturers. So most of the time it is more a case of the price and the dealer's service and/or warranty that makes the difference. Some automotive battery warranties are halved if they know you put it in a tractor or any sort of equipment. This said, the local NAPA parts house has been very good about adjustments and not caring what battery is used in. I personally put the highest CCA & reserve amp rated battery in the battery box I can afford from the best dealer who is the easiest to deal with. In other words you need to look beyond the price of purchasing the battery. Most warranties don't make much difference after the halfway point is reached in the total months used.

Go with an Optima. They will take long periods of non use without going dead or sulfating and they will not leak corrosive gas or liquids,so no corrosion of terminals or battery box. I have one Optima battery that is 15 years old, used and abused all it's life and still cranks like new. The only was to kill them is to overcharge them.

I've not yet bought one myslef, but have heard a lot of good reports on the Optima. Only down side is cost. Approx 100 to 120 dollars.
