Does a tractor hour equal 60 minutes or something else?

At least in the 60's, when Dad rented a backhoe for 40 hours to put in a septic system (you could do it yourself in those days), they were keyed to engine speed. We were operating at about half throttle, but Dad was determined to get his money's worth- with the result that I operated it far into the night, doing seemingly senseless jobs.

Most tractors are set up for 1 hour of running at exactly pto speed to equal 1 hour of real time. So if you are running max rpm plowing or something the tractor clock will appear fast, and if you are idling running a cement mixer the tractor clock will apear slow.... It is actually a revolution counter, not a true measure of time.

Some of the newer electronic meters operate differently, counting real hours.....

Yes it depends. on some tractors where it says "Hours at 2000 rpm" it would take 2 hours to record an hour if the engine was tootling around at 1000 rpm. I did hear that even quite a few years ago that John Deeres had an electronic meter i.e. even at tick-over it was 1 hour per hour, so you might see a JD with thousands of hours and the owner grins and says "My JD has done 10,000 hours without major overhaul!" which might not mean much. "Its not the hours you put in, its what you put in the hours!"

Hi Roy!

Ya know Roy, you don't say a whole lot, but when you do, it usually amounts to something. :>)

This reminds me of the old plow argument thing. "I can pull 5 or 6 sixteen inch bottoms with my old 50 hp tractor"

Here again, a good dose of salt is needed. 'Taint how much plow you put in the ground, but rather the amount of plowing done with the plow. :>)

Thanks for the read, enjoyed it,

Allan
