Has anyone ever heard of a product called "liquid glass" being used to seal a cracked head? I had a guy tell me it worked on an old truck head and he swears by it. It is sold in pharmacies. I'm not sure what the intended use is but this sounds a little far fetched. Any others heard of this before?

The stuff Redd mentioned is the stuff I have heard called "egg keep" I have known of it to work in at least one occasion and have heard a lot of guys swear it works. What I watched a neighbor do was pour a bottled in an old chevy six cylinder and coverd up the radiatot and ran it as hot as he dared you could see it seep through the crack and he shut it of and when it cooled a little bit he drained it let it sit overnight and put fresh water and anti freeze in it. He only drove it about once a week on a three hundred mile round trip. I was told by him and others that it would hold unless the thing got as hot as it did when he "treated" it. All who have done this tell pretty much the same way of doing it. It is not a pour in and drive fix you need to follow the procedure for it to work. I have seen a couple of old truck engines that had a slighly visible crack that had been done this way according to the owners.

I had a John Deere 2520 that had a leaky head gasket and put water glass in it. What a mess, it pluged the radator up good. I think if I had drained the antifreeze out first then used the water glass with straight water for a while then drained the water glass out then added antifreeze it might have worked. I have never had much luck with these kind of fixes, Fix it right the first time and be done with it.

The stuff worked in emergencies in the old days on thermal syphon system before water pumps. Save your money and fix it correct before you put a layer of thermal barrier goo and water pump abrasive in you cooling system.

yes water glass will seal cracks, temporarily.it is not compatible with antifreeze.then k&w metallic block seal isnt either.

"Water glass" is sodium silicate.

I believe that may be an ingredient of some modern "leak stop" products.

K&W Metallic Block Sealer is a good modern product (although I'm not saying it does or or does not contain sodium silicate, as I don't know).

What I heard of was "water glass" and I was told it was sold in pharmacies. I guess it was put in a pail of water and fresh eggs were submerged in the water and they would keep along time. Something from the ice box days I guess. And I was also told it was good for cracked blocks and heads. I never saw it or tried it and don't know if you can buy it.

I have an old JD A that I am Redoing and it had several large cracks in the block. Someone had put water glass in it and it held good. Never saw a leak or drip (it has a new block now). In a pinch it might get you by until you can fix the problem right.

I agree with you guys. I got back a CASE VAO that had the usual crack in the block behind the carburetor which I had sealed with sodium silicate 10 years before. The coolant in the system was low when I went to pick it up so I added some 50/50 mix when I got ready to start it..... it was leaking a bit so I added 3 oz. of sodium silicate and went to the field. By the time I got through marking that field the crack was no longer seeping...now, after a few more 'run-cool' cycles, it's completely dry.
