Is the cheapo antifreeze from Walmart, etc as good as the premium (read; higher priced) stuff sold other places?

In this neck of the woods, the cheap Walmart antifreeze is a 50% water and antifreeze mixture! So read the label carefully! Gene Davis

Whatever you do, don't mix the propylene glycol with ethylene glycol antifreeze. It will cause a nasty reaction in your engine. Good advice is to draine the old out and rinse the radiator before you put in new.

BTW, where do you guys get cheap antifreeze anyway. They all seem pretty much the same price around my neck of the woods.

Beware! Read the label carefully!
Sometimes they may say the same protection figure as you are thinking of, excepting they say PROTECTED to that temperature. That means the engine can freeze to that temperature and then thaw without damaging any castings, while YOU are thinking they mean it won"t freeze until the temperature you first thought of!
You are right, they are right, but you are just not thinking on the "sales patter" line. They are simply only telling you the part of the story you think you want to hear.
It" like asking "how many animals of each species did Moses take on the Ark?" Answer - see below.
Sometimes it is easy to get caught out. Did you?

down a bit further, and the answer is....

None, as it was Noah who built the Ark

I use Peak from Sams Club in everything but the skid loader. It came with some blood red stuff in it. Over the last 30 years what evers cheapest has gone in, changed when a hose breaks or when I open something up. Add 2/3 antifreeze 1/3 water when needed. Check it in the fall, it always floats 4 balls or more.

Do what you want. I have started using the newer propylene glycol. It's more expensive, but does not poison the animals if spilled or dumped. It does require a different tester, since the specific gravity is different. Your tractor, your call, your engine block, your animals (if any). My $.02. DickTN

I have no idea why people keep purchasing the dangerous stuff instead of propylene glycol? Mention the advantages and you get a blank look then they nod yes. Then they go and purchase the old poisonous Ethylene glycol anways just like their Daddy and Grand Daddy used???

Be careful, read the label. Some of the stuff Wal-Mart sells is already mixed 50% with water.

A gew years ago I bought some of the cheapo stuff at Canadian Tire, same idea as Wally World, some outfit bottles about 20 billion litres for them. I mixed it in a pail 2:1 (it gets cold up here) according to label directions. Before I poured it into my tractor I tested the mixture and my gauge showed a lot lower than the chart on the bottle did. I got another tester from my neighbour and the same thing, showed it to be too weak. If I were you I'd do the same thing, take a sample and mix it to whatever mix ratio you want and then test it for a check. If it's not up to standards then take the stuff back. When I took my stuff back (mixed) in two bottles, the guy didn't seem too concerned at the store. I guess someone's busted engine block at minus 35 degrees didn't worry him too much.

It sounds to me like you guys are mixing it wrong. Antifreeze by itself WILL freeze! It has to be mixed with the right amount of water to work(don't know why- chemical reaction). I have used all brands and mix them 50/50 and it always tests in the -40 F. range. which is plenty for northeast Ohio.

In my post I mentioned that I mixed it 2:1 (not full strength) which is generally the recommended ratio up in these parts. Ohio gets cold but at times up here, it gets COLD.

Alberta mike is correct. The obsolute best mix for freeze protection is 68% pure antifreeze mixed to 32% H2O Or 2 quarts anti freeze to 1 quart water is close enough to that mix.

Same basic stuff, except the additives may be different. I stick to Prestone green. Never let me down. Saving nickels on maintenance items usually means spending big bucks later.
