Just got to work. Logged in and started reading mail. My company has a pretty good firewall system. Got this email and response from my security.

An email is being circulated from "exchange-robot"@paypal.com. In it it says that $175 has been charged to your account with the tracking #A866DECO. It says to click on the "link" to assess shipping information.

Security says this is an attempted virus attack. Says it's attempting to install a virus on your computer (and others) entering your computer thru one of the Microsoft back doors (that they have for their snooping reasons....copying their software) and security says that there is no current fix. When one is available we (the employees of my company) will be notified.

We are told that if you open the "link" you'll get the virus and send it to everyone in your address book.

Security does not send out hoaxes. I know lots of folks here shop ebay and I know that one of the payment methods for ebay is paypal.

Heads up. I don't want you infecting your computer and sending the virus to me.

Mark

This is not a joke.

Thanks. I use Symantec/nortons with good results. Updates every week. I do NOT use MS "lookout" (outlook) because many of these thing relies on it to reproduce. Mozilla, Or firefox/thunderbird are very good.

Did you have it updated to new virus? Every Thursday or more often if needed. Go automatic. There was one virus last spring that got my friend on Tuesday and Norton did not have the definition till Thursday. I got lucky on that one.

Mark,

Here again, I don't wanna start a war, but I've got to agree with you.

If you want to cut your computer's performance in half, run McAfee or Norton. Those two outfits absolutely work a machine to death and in my view, are the poorest excuse for antivirus software yet to come down the pike.

However, they always seem catch up to the crisis within 5 to 7 days of an outbreak. :>)

Well, after what I've been through, nothing short of pulling the plug would make it run slower.

The Mc seems to be ok although I have an update alert show up on the screen and it doesn't recognize my email address as being the person who registered the SW initially so therefore won't download it. I checked the address and it's correct. Finding out their service stinks. Only way to communicate is email and that's whenever your next, unless you want to cough up a pocket full of 100's and call them.

Norton has just plain gone off the deep end the past 18 months. Used to like it before then, but they have become basically uncompatable with themselves. It wouldn't even do the on-line renewal, and I have 2 friends that it will crash the computer & not allow internet access any more. Another friend one of it's helper programs crashed his new XP machine on the 3rd day of ownership, totally scrambled the hard drive, took a total reformat & start over.

Don't know what happened to them, but not on my list of software any more....

I just recovered my crashed home computer. New hard drive and suite of McAfee (Firewall, virus, spyware). Office Depot had the Mc and I figured if it was good enough to occupy lots of shelf space in that store, it's good enough for my computer. That was $350 and a lot, I mean a lot of frustration.

Not fun trying to run a computer that has been taken over. What I couldn't figure out is when I'd log on to my home page, it would immediately get routed thru yimag.com which I looked up and found was Yoga International Magazine. Now why would they want to skim off my internet activities.....Yoga??

Seems that a lot of adware and spyware sneaks onto a computer that no anti virus software stops. If a computer starts running really slow or homepages start changing then probably getting some adware or spyware on it. There is one spot www.microsoft.com/spyware that has a couple of programs on it you can download for free that does a pretty good job of cleaning up a computer from what I have been told. Haven't tried it yet myself but plan on getting them downloaded one of these days.

Don't ask me I really don't understand,we'll have to ask Allen but my coumpter guy said they his words just sit out in cyber and wait for someone to log on or off and then I guess they hitch a ride and somehow get in your system and this happened while I was using norton to many people know codes to get around it he say's.
