Has anyone had any experience fabricating their own v-belts from open ended v-belt material, or perforated v-belts where you screw the ends together, or this new open-ended material from Fenner Industries? Can anyone recommend any open-ended v-belt brands? Its for my Ford Diesel tractor engine. Thanks!!!!

Thanks for all your advice!
I went to a hydraulic shop today and they were able to order a link belt from Gates Corp for me. A 5 foot length is about 45.00.
The sales man said it would work on my backhoe engine. This is the belt form the crankshaft to the water pump to the alternator. I know the continuous belt would be much cheaper, but this would entail a time consuming unbolting of the hydraulic pump shaft to get the belt through. I'll let you know how long this link belt lasts. I saw on the Fenner Website that supposedly, these link belts are a permanent fix. I hope they are right! Thanks again for your kind advice! I appreciate it!

The Fenner stuff is expensive, but it is not new. We've been selling it for over 10 years. Gates also makes some called Nu-T-Link. It's been around longer than Power-Twist, and in my opinion, is easier to use. Browning makes standard rubber v-belting that is much cheaper, but the connectors to splice the ends together are very expensive. They usually come in boxes of 10, and cost well over $100/Box.

These all work very well. The Gates & Fenner work better than the Browning. But Gerald is right; all these are made for "industrial" applications to replace A, B, C, & D belts. So you'll need to check your belt to see if an industrial section v-belt will run properly in your pulley. I don't know of anything like this specifically for "automotive" applications.

The makers do have great claims about versatility and power handling. But when you look at price you will find you can buy two or three application specific belts for the price of enough power twist material to make ONE. And sometimes the V angle on automotive and farm equipment is different from that standard A, B, C, and D V belts for industrial use. Then the power twist wouldn't fit the tractor pulleys right.

I've got the Powertwist link-belts on two of my backhoes and on one crawler (Case 580CK, Ford Industrial 4000, and a Deere 1010 crawler). They were around $22 apiece and work very well. Yes, I could buy a one-piece belt cheaper, but would also have to remove and/or unbolt the hydraulic pump to change a one piece belt. If they were $50 apiece they'd still be worth the price.
