I need a tractor for general homestead stuff and snow removal, maybe a small loader, something versatile. I"m leaning towards an 8n, partly because they seem to have endless supply of parts, thats important to me. I"d like to get my foot in the door for $2000, only want to do this once so I could spend more if it was going to be that benificial (i.e. power steering?). What others do you recomend?

drew: don't fall for that JD and Ford being the only tractors with good parts supply. Any tractors produced in excess of 20,000 units have a reasonably good parts supply. There are only four models ever produced in excess of 250,000 units, Ford 8N and Farmalls A-SA, H-SH and M-SM. I'll bet there is a better parts supply for those four models than any other tractors in North America.

Oliver 1650 would be a very good choice

What ever you do buy I'd make sure of 2 things. 1-live PTO 2 live hyd. Both of those an 8N doesn't have and can be a pain because of it. Wheather you buy Ford,JD, or something else there is always the good ones and the bad ones.

Ford is a ggod choice. The problem with anything other than Ford or JD is parts availability. Al the other makes have been combined into AGCO and thear aren't as many dealers. I would figure on spending closer to $4000 to get what you want and get a 600 or 800 Ford. Live hydraulics optional PS and live power some come with loaders. You can find good ones that would be needing work for this much. Don't get Selecto-SPeed trans. If you can stand a little more $get a 72 and up 2000 or 3000 Ford. Better tractor yet. Go to FOrd board to learn more. Shop around and you could get a bargain.

Might want to check with an AC- model WD, WD45, D17. More hp, live pto and hydraulics. D17 would be the best of the three. Other brands also offer more than the 8N, without spending gazillion bucks.

An 8N is a first good choice but for $2000 and needing a plow and loader, you might get a "run hard and put away wet" one. I have an 8N and it serves the needs for snow plowing and other 3 pt hitch equipment. However, without full time hydraulic and PTO, you'll be frustrated, having to declutch, put in neutral, leave clutch out to work the hydraulics or run the PTO to unclog a bushhog. A real pain. SO, I went to a later model Ford, a 4000 but they start with the models after the NAA. The first ones with full time were the 800's, 860 (I think)or "workmaster" etc. These also have parts availability and also have an overhead valve engine with 45HP vs the 25 in the 8N. The 8N will get sluggish with a 5 foot bushhog in thick grass and then it's all the above to get it moving.

2 grand will be something of a limitation, depending on how much repair work you are willing to do at the outset. Certainly a loader tractor for 2k will be a project; I am partial to Fords although pound for pound, hp is cheaper by getting an Allis or Farmall. Depends on what you really need to do. I find a ford N to be very handy for a wide variety of things, whereas a larger Farmall or Allis would be better for dedicated field work, brush hogging etc.
