I have a 8N Ford with a side distributor. It is quite worn and I have quite a time with the points. If I convert to electronic ingition will the side play in the shaft still be a big issue or should I just spend the extra money and replace the distributor? Is there anywhere to buy parts instead of replacing the whole unit?

I had a badly worn distributor and found a place in Portland, OR (www.philbingroup.com)that rebuilds these old distributors for a flat $100 plus shipping. My bushing was worn and I needed a new shaft. I was much cheaper than a rebuilt distributor and I saved enough to sprung for a Pertronix and man what a difference! No points to mess with and it starts cold in a half turn and idles smothly. We don't have anybody locally that does this so I had to send mine off. You may be able to find someone to do it locally. If not, give the above address a try.

Bob, I believe the bushings for that distributor are still available. Look at picture FO-88 in the FO-4 manual.Still list the part numbers. Would be a lot less expensive than a new distributor. Sonny

Generally speaking, the Pertronix electronic ignition is less sensitive to a worn distributior shaft/bushings than breaker points are.

I can think of a number of solutions and since I have an 8N w/ side distributor, but haven't had to rebuild the distributor, I'm blue skying. I have a small lathe and I would turn out bushing of brass or porous bronze if I needed them. A small machine shop could do that easily. The other option is a catalog I got from a friend in NC from an outfit in NC that sells about anything one might need for the N series of Fords. They even manufacture their own replacements for out of stock stuff having some of the big machines, molds and fixtures.
ONE problem, I have to find it. And I'll give it a try in my less than systematic filing system. The catalog is worth the price since it has excellent parts break-out views and numbers for about every part and assembly.
