Tractor Towing.....without a trailer?

I plan on attending an auction this weekend where a nice little 1953 Super A is available. The sale is about 30 miles from my home and if I can get this little tractor (2400 lbs.) I would need to go somwhere and rent a trailer, pick it up, etc. But, is there a way to tow the tractor behind my '97 F150 safely...like stablizing the steering on the tractor and just tow real slow? I'm just trying to avoid some aggravation but I don't want to cause an accident over being a little lazy. I will heed your advice. Thanks.

I towed my 9N Ford useing a automotive type tow
bar. Had to tie the steering wheel with bungee
cords to keep it from shimmying. I only needed to
go two miles, but if you can stay on "backroads"
you might be alright.

Guys around here use a dolly and just leave tractor idling and just pull them down road. And they never have any problems.

As I see it, you have 3 options, and NONE of them include towing the tractor home without a trailer. 1. You can drive it home under it's own power.
2. You can rent or borrow a flat bed car hauler type trailer.
3. You can get someone else to haul it for you

If you are going to have to tow it at tractor speeds, just drive it and don't risk any of the problems associated with towing. If the tractor won't run in order to drive it, then ask around at the auction when you get it bought. I'll bet there will be several people there who would haul it home for you for very few $$. If not you can rent or borrow a trailer and pick it up a little later.

I flat towed a Farmall MD home behind my truck...30 miles took 2 hours... I built a towbar which worked well... . It was a lot more fun towing home on the back roads, rather than loading it on the trailer, securing it with chains, dealing with loading ramps and a winch etc...

Take along a drain pan, an oil filter, 5 quarts of oil & 6 quarts of 90wt gear oil.
Change the oil & filter in the engine and the gear oil in the transmission, top off the gear oil in the final drives and drive it home. Don't forget to check the radiator level too.
If the transmission lube looks clean and not milky, it would probably be OK to let it go.
Get somebody to follow you with a spare can of gas.

It'll only go 10 or 12 MPH so it'll take awhile.
Don't forget a slow moving vehicle sign for the back of the tractor.

I towed one of my Fords on a car dolly about 10 mile with no harm. I can remember a gut who used to flat tow his Ford backhoe behind his truck. I don't think he had any problems. Just keep the speed down.

The super A I have will run about 18mph but the tire are alittle taller and the gov is turned up a little. But stock they run about 10 or so.

It'll probably be easier to borrow a car trailer. If you know somebody that has an a frame it will work also. I don't know if I would want to go 30 miles but 10 miles isn't to bad to pull with a chain if you can take back roads, just have a good driver on the tractor and a soft foot in the truck. If everything checks out ok on the tractor you could probably drive her home. May take you 2-3 hours, I'm not sure what road gear on an A is, but a M will move right along. And don't forget to bring gas.

In the '60s, we pulled a MF "50" untold hundreds of miles with a home-made "A-frame" hitch; left the tractor running in neutral and held speed to around 30 mph. Of course, it belonged to us and we knew the condition of the tires, gears, steering components, etc.....

I'd probably just drive it, myself. Good way to find out the condition of the rear end & motor over the hours. :)

An A is pretty simple so this likely doesn't apply, but some slightly newer tractors are pretty fussy, towing even a couple 100 feet without the motor running will cause expensive repairs to shafts that don't get lubricated.

Why not ask around, good chance someone at the sale might be going your way with an empty or part-empty trailer....

Even towing "real slow" would be very hard on differential, bearings, etc. Tires, even if they are like new may not hold up to towing speed. "Real slow" in your pickup would still be "light speed" for the A. Would be afraid of causing more damage to the tractor than it is worth. Not to mention that the tractor probably wouldn't tow very safely anyway. Would be better to either get a trailer or drive the tractor home on back roads. 30 miles is a fair piece especially on something as slow as an A, but others have driven them farther than that. Still better than towing. At least that's my opinion, I could be wrong.

I've towed them before when I was young and dumb, lol
If you have a pickup you can wench the front of the tractor in to the bed and then pull it slow that way, but you have to bind it so it can not move at all other then turn.

Just drive it home.Towing it behind your truck will take just as long because if you get up to say oh,60 pulling it,it wont make it home.Only take ya a couple of hours, give or take.or just rnet a uhaul trailer and have it home sooner.

Unknown oil in finals, old bearings, towing faster than tractor designed for, no matter how hard you try to "tow slow"- a recipe for disaster. I gotta go with Alvin- rent a trailer.
