HI Forum

I would stay with the Non-Detergent oil . Case being not the clean engine trouble. But first was the tractor rebuild? If it was use what ever oil you wish to.

Now , The guides in the heads on these older tractors were made for oil to go past them, if things are seated and you put deterent oil and clean them off , now she is going to smoke if she was not smoking before. About the rings and cyclinders I was always told same thing here.

I would say the deterent oils would clean some of the build up out , But in ours tractor 2 H's and 5 AC's I will use Non-deterent , Most are 50 + years on the engines That old oil must be doing something ??? Change oil when you should and filters and she run for years.

Wow! It wasn't that many years ago that the question of "What oil" would bring on a big old yellin match about detergent vs nondetergent, new vs OEM specs. I'm glad to see that has all been settled.

I agree with Dave, NC and Sammy, use a modern oil. If this engine hasn't been overhauled and cleaned however I might error on the side of caution and change the oil frequently for the first while.

The arguement that always arose about the detergent vs nondetergent oil is that the detergent oil may cause old sludge and solids to become suspended and cause damage. That's what the detergent oil does, it holds solids and sludge suspended in the oil so that the filter can catch it and also so that you get rid of the solids and sludge when you drain the oil. The old non detergents would allow those solids to settle out and create deposits.

If you have lots of time and want to tinker with the tractor some I would suggest that you drop the oil pan and clean it so that at least you have a clean resevior.

That's my 2 cents anyway.

I also live in NW Wisc. and repair old tractors as a side business. What Nebraska Cowman said is accurate, the new oils are way better than the oils of even 5 years ago. However, I will add that if you are using the 5w20 that most, if not all, the OEMs are now calling for or, if you do not change your oil in your vehicles yourself, I would use 10w30 in the tractor especially if the engine has a lot of hours on it.

my advice is to use the same oil you already have on hand for your car. Modern muli-weight oils are quite sufficient in these old tractors.

I have a good friend that is my Dad's age, who was a Harry Ferguson mechanic when Dad bought our 1953 TO30. It came with non-detergent oils in the motor and the trans/diff/hyd reservior. The mechanic said to stay with that type oil because some oil additives would react with the bronze bushings and cause very slow deterioration. Yes- the owners manual says detergent oil may be used. Dad was faithful to that advice, and now I am too. The engine has good compression(97/100/100/98), does not require any top-off between changes(bi-annual). The engine has never been apart for any reason. Motor oil refiners have reacted to changing technology by improving thier product. Some of the old machine technology used materials not designed for modern refinery products. I use 30W30/summer and 20W20/winter. My TO30 starts every time is these Indiana winters;- hope I've not jinked myself now.
