I bought a 4230 JD Hi-crop, I am having problems shifting it, is there anything I can do to fix it. I had it all apart and the bushings and everything looks good.

The gears I'm having trouble with are 1,3,1R. I've heard its a hard transmission to learn how to shift.

1-3, 2-5, 4-7 & 6-8 likely shift well. Going from one of the four ranges to another range while in motion will always be a clashing experience.

Arlin, Please describe more about the tranny troubles you are haveing. My cousin got a 74 4230 last year all up shifts are easy ,but the down shifts on each set are the drizzlees.
1,2,4,6 are easy. R1,R2,3,5,7,8 are the drizzles.Always gringing, slop in the console? syncros out? We are not sure. JD dealer wants +,- $1000 just to rebuild the console. Don't know what it would take to put syncros in the tranny!
Later,
John A.

Specifically, what gear(s) are you having trouble with?
