As you fellas remember I hit a deer monday morning. My car is cracked up good, I got a rental car now and my car might be fixed by early next week. Heres my question. Do deer whistles work? I would like to buy one but dont know if they would help. Where would I buy one? If I would have hit it just 2 feet closer to the driver side of the hood I could have been killed, really makes you think how quickly you could be gone because of a 300 lb stupid animal.

If the whistle manufacturers begin to pay for any damage caused by a deer on whistle equipped vehicles, then it might be worth it. Otherwise, buyer beware.

I asked that same question of my buddy at the auto salvage yard while we were looking at the several deer smashed cars they towed in that week. He said that almost all the wrecked ones had whistles on them And that if you can find a whistle that has been run at night, and has not taken a direct hit from a bug,and no longer wistles because of the slug of bug guts,he would like to see it. Nuff said.

I think they work, especially at fairly high speed. With the whistles, at least the deer seem to lift up their heads and look toward the oncoming car.

We have them on all our vehicles and have not hit a deer since I started putting them on (hit 3 before that). They only cost a little bit and install very easily. The only problems I have had is that my wife sometimes runs her car through one of those car washes with huge rotary brushes. Takes off the deer whistles every time...

I think they are worth it.

backwards will the deer come running. Been a very lean hunting season so far and looking for a competitive edge. Smoke pole season started today and runs thru next Sat.

Needing some venison to go with all the sweet corn from this summer :)

PS - I don"t think them whistles work and someone is just getting rich off of selling them.

All I can say is that in a couple of years of driving in a deer-infested area, I never hit one until the whistles I'd stuck on my '80 Chevy had fallen off. For $2 I was willing to take the chance that they did.

I can't understand why deer care about a whistle. They know the vehicle is coming via the low frequncy sounds that travel for a mile of more. Yet ultrasonic sound being high frequncy can only be heard at short ranges before it fades away. Have to admire some sharp cookie that is filling thier pockets on the royalties however.

thanks guys, I need to find out where to buy one. $10 aint a bad price if you miss hitting one. Maybe I could make a huge wedge on the front of my car like the locomotives and blast the deer off to the side.

I was out deer hunting. Had a doe just about jump over myself while standing in the bush about 30 yrds in. Irony was she had ran across us on the road a block away and 10 minutes before that. One shot from the 10 gauge with 000 buck and she stopped on the spot. I suppose for $2.00 put a set of whistles on and maybe it will help?

I was told that when deer hear the sound of the whistles they freeze and don't move. I have observed this behavior when approaching from a distance. Their heads will jerk up to see what direction the sound is coming from, then it doesn't move until you are well past.

My brother was a game warden for 38 years. A local man in his area usually hit 7-8 deer each year as a result of his being on the road almost constantly due to his job. After installing deer whistles his accident rate dropped to 3-4 deer per year. He is now a firm believer in them.

For the $10 or whatever they cost, why not install them. You have certainly had more aggravation from the accident than $10. Maybe they work, maybe they don't, but $10 won't hardly make a dent in the wallet in this day and age, so give them a try.

What ever you do...don't put them on backwards, you will have deer charging out of the woods and chasing your car!!

I had a lady come into my office the other day and told me a deer ran into the side of her car, and " I even have deer whistles on my car!" she said...I said, " I bet you have them on backwards..." you should have seen the look on her face as she processed this comment..I think she really believed me. It was classic.

I live in deer country. Hit three in one year. I have used dear whistles for over 15 years. Have only hit one since and he dashed out ofthe brush right in front of truck.I can see the deer perk up their ears and run away from the road when I approach. You can still have problems at speeds less than 40 mph because they don't produce any noise and deer that runn out right in front of you. I also think the varying results are due to the quality variations between different brands. Some are just cheap junk.

That said I will continue to run mine because I think they work

300lbs,,man did it have rack, was it a muley or a white tail,,.I drive 100 miles a day through good deer country here in New York,,I drove $1000-$2000 cars first coupla years,,never hit a deer,,got tired a tearing up the junkers in 6-12 mos. So I bought a brand new one, 2 weeks into cruisin in my sparklin newbie and "WHACK" there he was. Honestly though my opinion is that if you really pay attention and know what to look for and you are on a familiar route, you can cut your chances dramaticaly, the one I did hit and other close calls seem to be mostly me not being on guard.Oh yeah about them deer whistles,,I never tried em,but I always wondered if you put them on your rear bumper will deer chase you.

Well Good Luck ,,watch out for Bambi

I have heard that they don't work because the deer have too big of lips to blow on them properly.

Some years ago a motorcycle magazine I subscribed to did a very detailed study of deer whistles.

To physically work, the whistles require air flow through the unit. To get that, the rear must be clear of obstructions for at least five feet. Installation on the bumper in front of the grill ensures that the whistle cannot blow due to the stagnant and turbulent air flow. They would blow if mounted on the hood or roof of a car, or on the outboard areas of a motorcycle.

Many of the whistles tested were physically incapable of whistling due to defective design or production line flaws.

Deer do not hear ultrasonic sounds. That is what the whistles produce. So the deer do not hear a functioning whistle any better then you or I can hear them.

So;
1, many of the whistles are inoperable out of the box, 2, most are installed improperly and will not produce a tone, and 3, deer can't hear the tone even if the whistle does work.

All that said, in driving through deer populated areas (I think they used a deer ranch for this), motorcycles with functioning whistles did seem to repell deer. Number of deer seen and the action of those deer were used as the criteria.

So the final summary was that they cannot work, but when installed properly, do seem to work somehow.

Indy, You know as well as I do, that our Goverment put millions of tax dollars into a study before sticking those signs along our hiways. If deer can't read, there would be no point in the signs. Deer are like people, some will obey the law, some won't.

Paul, Here in my part of the country, Hunters have used the "No deer left behind policy for years. It does work. In all my years of driving I have never hit a deer. I can only credit this to the no deer left behind policy. I truely hope that in the next 4 years this will become policy for the people in the midwest. If not, good people like Midwest Redneck, will have no choice but to drive their tractors to work. Redmud:

Indy, A few years ago my grandson bought a new car, We were looking it over and in the grill were a pair of deer whistles. I ask what they were? He said that they would keep the deer off the hiway. I laughed and said if the deer can't see and hear an 18 wheeler? how are they going to see the little whistles stuck in your grill?
Next day I walked in front of the car and the whistles were gone. I ask where they were? He said I can't believe I paid them fools 6 bucks for them. I saw another opening there but thought I better let it go. Redmud:

A few years ago here in SD the State Highway Patrol installed whistles on all their cruisers. After a period of time they were found to have NO effect on the percentage of deer hits. In fact I would guess that because they give you a false sense of security, you become less observant, and probably the accident rate is higher. It's all a matter of mathematical probability...and if a deer decides to step in front of you!
PS: Here's a link to a deer accident reduction study that has some interesting points (such as: whistles having no effect; European-style headlights; placing deer carcasses next to deer crossing signs causes people to slow down, thus reducing accidents, etc).

MR,

They are pure snake oil. You can verify how well they work by visiting any auto body shop in the land.

Those guys just roll on the floor laughing at the owners who want to make darned sure their "deer whistles" are reinstalled on a unit that just sustained $12K in damage from hitting a deer. :>)

NO!!!!!

I guess I should expand on that. Quite some time ago, a friend of mine (my insurance agents husband) gave me a pair of deer whistles after I had a close call. I put them on the wife"s car as I was driving it to work as a fuel saving measure. After hitting three deer in as many weeks, I physically and violently removed them from the front of the vehicle.

Some people will tell you that they work because they haven"t hit a deer since putting them on. Maybe they wouldn"t have hit anything with them off.

Just the way it happened for me.

In Indiana the Farm Bureau Insurance company used to advertise and sell the deer whistles. After about 3 years they stopped selling them and quit saying they helped reduce auto/deer collisions. On inquiry, the branch manager said their collision data did not support any savings by promoting the whistles.
