can anyone tell me why I have to use starter fluid to start a JD 2130? But, after it runs for a while and I kill it, it will restart right off without starter fluid! But, if it sets overnight I have to use starter fluid to start it again!

Thanks in advvance

Could be a number of reasons. Worst scenario is a full recondition of engine the is needed.
You don"t say what your ambient conditions are. No diesel will start as easily when cold compared with when warmer. If temperatures are low more heat needs to be developed in the combustion chamber to achieve combustion.
Alternatives to complete overhaul might be injection problems, loss of compression due to valves etc.
One thing is fairly certain - if you have to use copious amounts of ether to start it in warmish conditions, you will be likely to further damage the top rings/ring grooves due to the ether exploding rather than burning (subsonic flame travel) and causing shock waves which can easily break top rings if they are at all loose in the piston.
You will know the condition of the engine , well we certainly don"t, and you need to consider engine hours, oil consupmtion, last injection service, etc.
