If you are getting washboard from box blade, then you are going faster than you should.

I use a boxblde, landscape rake and loader.
Mix and match as the job calls for.

I use a box blade to spread gravel just for myself. Like the others have said you will get dips and washboard effect from it. The only way to eliminate it weather you use a box blade, rake, or back blade is wheels behind the implement. I have a 6ft rake with wheels about 2ft behind the rake. That levels like you can't believe. So first I use the box then when it's pretty close I go over it with the rake and wheels and it comes out great. If I had wheels for the box blade I'm sure it would do the same thing. I was even thinking of rigging up some kind of wheels behind the box. The longer the spacing between the wheels and the blade the better. Also the longer distance from the tractor wheels to the blade the better. My $.02

I do it for a little extra income. This is a homemade implement that is 9 foot wide. You can see more homemade implement pics at my web site photo album under homemade implement.

I call it a leveler. The idea behind it is to leave the front cutting edge just a little above grade. The front edge will take out the high spots and the gravel / dirt will flow to the back where the gravel / dirt will fill the low spots. I like it alot. Land prid sells a tail wheel for the back of there implements. I have one but have not used it enough to pass judgement.

great, yeah i do have the same prob as everyone else, wash board, and plan on adding a rear wheel, somehow. wouldn't a york rake do the same as a box when it comes to hitting dips and ripples, also i picture the rake only pulling up gravel and leaving the base behind and it's the base is what i need to fill in the low spots, not just a pile of rocks alone. make sense? also im about to buy a new tractor kubota L3830, is this too big? and it requires a 6 ft box blade to cover the r4 tracks, i'm used to my 5ft blade and could fit in pretty tight corners on residential jobs. thanks for reply's.

I forgot to mention that my york rake has wheels that run about 2 ft behind the blade. You mention getting a bigger tractor. A longer wheelbase will help as it reduces up and movement of tractor.

Jase,
If you are buying a tractor that big, get a loader on it with a bucket that is 4-5 ft wide. You can do a lot better job of leveling with a bucket on tractor and back draging the loader, with the bucket flat than you can do with any back blade, box scraper, or york rake. You can also use the loader bucket to spread your rock around also. I do not do this for a living, my dad has done this for years and he always made a lot, driveway, anything as smooth as anything I have ever seen work.

good replies guys,i just wasn't sure if the l3830 was too much tractor for these small residential jobs but i think i'll adjust and get used to the six foot box. i'm definetley adding a wheel to the end of the box, i read some good ideas but don't see any pics. anyone have pics? also, should i put one in the center or two on each end for six ft wide blade? imay have to start a new threadd for this question.

The best way we have found to do this is either to purchase and use a 4 wheel drag, they work real nice, not cheap to buy though, the other thing we did was to spread it with the end gate of the truck then back drag it with a loader on a skid steer, wheel loader or us a small tractor with a loader.

I spread gravel for myself and others using a York rake with wheels. Puts a nice finish on it. A box blade on a small tractor will have problems with depth variation as the wheels move up and down due to bumps and dips.

Anyway what questions do you have.

The best way to spread gravel is right out of the tailgate of a dump truck on the go. This puts a nice even coating down fast.

I rarely do it for anybody else, but my preference is a 4-wheeled pull-behind road grader behind my similar-sized compact tractor.

If your question is bounce, put some wheels on your boxblade. Won't be as good as a real road grader, but better.

I only do it part time. Seems people are tight with the bucks this year.

I sure dont do it for a living but spread 100 tons a year or so for the last 20 years. Never used a box blade though; first a grader blade, then a front loader, and now a skid loader.
