Hello all I am the proud new owner of a 1958 IH 350 utility with loader and backhoe. It has been a great unit but I have a hard time geting it started. I put electronic egnition and that is great but when I go to start it it will not turn over. If I take the starter out and use a crowbar to turn the engine over a inch or two put the starter back in it starts up. Not sure what to do but had the starter rebuilt and got a new batery and cables... no change... like this from day one. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT... thanks Dave

Hi!
I have a similier problem with my 350U. The starter solenoid doesn't last long, and when it starts acting up, it will engage the starter, but not spin the engine. To test the theory, jumper across the terminals (bypass the solenoid) with a chunk of battery cable. Make sure there's no spilled gas, cuz it will spark good. If it spins then, replace the solenoid.

Also, remove the starter and sand the contact area between the starter and bell housing. A little Never Seize helps the current flow in that spot.

I dont think it is a problem with gear ware as the starter engages but cant turn itself or the engine. Thanks

Starter ring gear needs to be quartered. All 4 cylinder engines always stop in one of two places due to compression,so those two areas on the ring gear get all the wear.Tractor will have to be split, the flywheel removed and the ring gear taken off and turned a quarter of a turn.
You might possibly get by with replacing the starter drive gear though.
