Is there a rule of thumb that converts tractor speed while bush hogging to acres mowed? For example, if mowing at 4 mph, how many acres could be covered in an hour? I am using a 6 ft bush hog.

speed x cut divided by 10 = 2.4 acres per hour

That's the way we always figured..... allows for a modicum of down time.

4 MPH X 5280 feet in a mile = you travel 21120 feet in an hour X a 6 foot mower = 126720 square feet mowed in an hour divided by 43,560 square feet in an acre = 2.9 acres mowed per hour.

Factor that times field efficiency, the % of the time you are actually mowing, rather than turning at ends or corners, and you'll have your answer.

You need to consider the "over-lap" when calculating such things as bush hogging. With a 6' mower, you will probably cut about 62" to 64" of the 72" true width of the mower.

Then you need to allow for time spent turning and slowing when you encounter obsticles. At 4 MPH, you will probably average about 2-1/2 acres an hour. John

Then you gotta add the "stop to answer the cell phone time", and "the wife and kids need money time". and..... the list goes on and on and...

I run a couple tractors almost full time during the summer, doing custom bush hogging. (My son and I) We use 7' mowers, on 60 HP tractors. We can run close to 5-1/2 MPH in clean ground. With some of the "magic formula's" will tell you that we SHOULD be mowing close to 5 acres an hour. I'll tell you from experience we can BARELY mow 4 acres an hour each. John
