Hi All,

Just about done converting this old H over to live hydraulics. Boy! That power steering sure works nice with this heavy loader.

And the distributor driven pump seems to handle the loader okay too. Okay, gotta go get her clothes put back on. :>)

Allan,

I have that same setup on my 300.. adjustable flow control valve and all. I checked with several sources- that is the correct flow control(with a built in pressure relief valve) An old IH mechanic told me you can get a fixed flow control valve which does the same thing. I think he said the flow to the charlynn torque generator was 2 gals/min- which worked well. It is my understanding a lot of these charlynn powersteering setups that were sold back in the day ran off of a separate hydraulic pump... I guess now we know why. The saginaw 3-point on my 300 is slow too, due to the powersteering. Anyway, I can live with it- which is better than no powersteering..

BOY! That girl will really reach up there! A good looking rig.
A word of caution though. As you can see by the position of the bucket when it is at the top, material will spill over the back & ping up the paint. (It"s isn"t any better if it is manure either.)
I would be tempted to add an extension to the back of the bucket to keep her from spilling backwards.

Good Luck with your "NEW" tractor!

Britt

Hi Leland,

My next little project is to get some strut rods tied up under the belly of that tractor.

I've been putting this chore off for a long time now and if I don't hurry up and get it done, one of these days, I'm gonna end up with an H laying out in the middle of the yard in two pieces. I don't even want that! :>)

Later,

Allan

That rig will be so nice to operate you will wonder why anyone thought they could improve on it.

Hi Rusty,

Yes, it made a totally different rig out of it and it doesn't even seem like the same tractor.

The big boys tell me that I've got the wrong proprietary valve on it, in that this one has to be manually set and doesn't automatically "govern" the demand by the power steering.

Tryin' to research this now, as I want full pump flow to that loader if there is no demand from the power steering. The way it is now, this valve cuts back on the speed of the loader operation somewhat. Just 'taint what I want.

Re: Maiden Voyage -- tire chain question in reply to Allan in NE, 10-30-2004 14:33:20
Hi Allen,

I posted a couple of days ago, asking a few questions about tire chains for an M. A couple of responses included "Ask Allen in NE". I notice that what you've got on that H is what some other folks recommended. I won't re-type it all here, but I'd appreciate it if you could look at the thread from last week "tire chains" and add your wisdom.

thanks,

bob

Allen your photo shows a flow control valve for adjusting the speed of a hydraulic motor I think you need what is called a priority valve but if its working for you use it and enjoy your tractor time

Hi Allan,

It's nice to see that you got her goin'. You been busy at that rather than stirrin' the pot here, huh? (grin) That valve you have there just looks like what I know as a flow control valve. They also have one like that that is pressure compensated. I think what will happen is that if you lift your loader, with that particular valve you have, your steering may lock?? With the PC valve, it shouldn't, I think, mabey... Brain foggy now.... too late. Basically with the PC valve, you should be able to supply constant flow regardless of pressures in the excess circuit. I may be wrong in the descripotions somewat, but the difference is along those lines. I don't think you could actually automatically govern the flow without going to a closed center system either. Then the pump could just stroke out. With the open center, there will be trade offs, unless you go to a dedicated steering pump. However, what you have there now must be a beauty compared to "armstrong" steering. HTH. BTW, the tractor looks good, but I can't get over that loader It has some awful reach.

I haven't heard of a "demand" type proportioning valve- only ones I've seen are the adjustable, like you have, and the ones that devote a set 3 gpm to the steering and the rest to the "work circuit". Let us know if you find the other type.

Allan, I am just as naive as you are. Are you keeping a "shopping list" of the parts that do what you want?
