I am thinking about buying one of the above tractors. I would like to hear some of y'alls input on which one you would buy or that you own. Diesel or Gas, parts readily available or not, enough power for shredding land and small hobby farm, etc... Saw a very nice looking 3010 Diesel for sale and I am just curious if it could handle my chores and was reliable. All non political info welcomed LOL! Thank you! Caleb in College Station Texas

How bout them Aggies?

The 4020 in my opinion gave JD the reputation it enjoyes today. Consider it the first revision of the new generation of tractors with all the bug fixes installed. I don't know of anyone who is unhappy with one. When re-motored they generally use a 4230 engine. The transmission was the big selling point and put then ahead of IH who revolutionized the industry with their farmall in the late 20's.

YOUR RIGHT. I HAVE A 4020 DIESEL AND I PUT A TURBO ON IT. I LOVE THIS TRACTOR AND WILL NEVER PART WITH IT. IT IS SAID THAT A 4020 WILL WORK RIGHT WITH A 5020 BECAUSE THE 5020 WAS A LITTLE UNDERPOWERED FOR ITS SIZE. THE 4020 WAS TRULEY A GEM. I SAW A LATE MODEL 4020 WITH CAB RECENTLY ADVERTISED FOR $20,000 DOLLARS. THATS INCREDIBLE!

If there is a choice, go with the 4020 or the 4000 over the 3010. The 3010 diesel was with the early 60's "new generation" JD, which were the first diesels to use a 4 cylinder over the old 2 cylinder. The later model diesels, 3020 4000 etc were an improvement over the "10" series. The "10" series gas were ok.

Have a niece and nephew at A&M, go aggies.

1 neighbor had a 3010, pulled 3-14' plows, Umcle anouther neighbor pulled 4-14" with 3020, either will pull a 12' disk, most 3010's have been converted with a 3020 kit in engine. 3020 pulled a 2 row corn chopper, 3010 was 55HP, 3020 was 70HP, 2020 is 54 HP. depends on how many acres you have to determin HP needs. The 4000 was built more for PTO work or high speed work as is bacicly a 4020 but with lighter weight castings for people that needed the HP but not the weight

caleb, Are you bent on getting the 10 or 20 series tractors? if not Let me suggest....
A 4230, next series up from the 20s. It is a 4020 on 30 series skin, + a better HD front-end. That will take loader work.
Find one with a PS to eliminste the worn out linkages in the syncro rangeset up.
or A 4030 if you are looking at a 3010.
I have been running my cousins newly aquired, last summer, 4230 It uses no oil to speak of, will handle a 15ft, Rhino SR-15, Bat-wing shredder just a flying, fairly economical on fuel. We have a loader on it too. The only problem it has is the linkages on the console shifter for the syncro-range tranny. OBTW ,Did I say that the 30 series tractors HAVE a HD front end to handle Loader work, unlike the 10,20 series tractors? Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

A new 03, 05 or 15 series plain vanilla Deere. Fair in price, reliable, has warrenty and will hold thier value. Do you want to be forever tinkering with a tired and often abused 32 to 44 year old machine?

You're looking at a HP range from 65 hp to 95 hp. My grandfather has a 3010 NF Diesel and my dad and just about everyone else I know has 4020 diesels. They're both excellent tractors. The 3010 is maneuverable and plenty powerful for chores around the farm. A guy I know has a 3020 diesel on a medium sized Knight TMR mixer. The 4020 is fine for general fieldwork and would be way more then enough for a small hobby farm.

By the way, aren't you the one who wants a full 1950's line of deere equipment? Just to let you know, the 3010 was built from 1960 to 1962 and the 4020 was built from 1963 to 1972...

Close! I would like nothing newer than 1969. But thanks for remembering! I have a 494A planter as of now and my collection is going to start growing fast once I get these darn hospital bills paid off. I will probably end up with a 70 JD or old farmall from the 50's to do the cultivating and light chores. I want something big enough to do the heavy work though ie 4020 or 3020. Thanks for the replies.

I really like those 3010/3020 diesels for smaller work. A 4020 diesel PS is about tops though for power and 3 point use. Don't know much about the 4000.

Any of the above should handle most chores and a diesel would be what I would look for.

Have a 3010 Diesel. Definitely not a powerhouse, but a very handy, useful, dependable tractor.
