I have a Dynahoe with a Detroit 3 cyl diesel. The machine started to skip and run slugish, loosing 1 then 2 cylinders. Now it will not run, cranks an puts out some smoke like it is trying to start. I replaced the fuel filters and bleed the lines. Can anyone help me with fuel preasue specs?

I checked the fuel presure today, I tee"ed into the line where it comes out of the second filter and goes into the cyl head, Injector rail? seems all I get is 4-7 psi while cranking, doesn"t seem like enough. The emergency stop is not pulled out, I checked it and it seems to work ok, I haven"t Pull the intake to look inside.

I fixed it, dirt in the fuel tank, restricting fuel flow at the fitting on the bottom of the tank. Thanks for all the help. Dave

I've never seen a Detroit fail to run from low fuel supply pressure, unless it was because the filters were stopped completely up and their was simply no fuel. Here are a few things to try. First off give it a snort of ether and see if it even tries to fire. This can help you narrow things down as to wether the problem is fuel related or air related. Fuel and air is all a diesel needs to run and giving it a little ether you know the fuel is there so it helps narrow things down...and no it won't hurt the engine unless you give it way too much, all the engine knows is that it has a positive, easily ignitable fuel source.....Like one post already said make sure the emergency flap isn't tripped, and along the same lines you can also pull the intake snorkle and see if the blower is turning at all. Sometimes they will twist off the blower drive shaft and cause the problem your describing even though the flap isn't tripped. With the blower not turning the engine gets nothing through the intake and it shouldn't fire even if you give it a snort of ether. Next check the rack and make sure it's free. The skipping may have come from sticking injector(s) and now one or more are stuck in a no fuel position and not allowing it to start. In this case it should fire on ether. I've also seen them drop the lower half of the liner by splitting around the middle where the air inlet ports are. As you can imagine this is also "not a good thing" and can cause strange behavior out of the engine. Beyond that without actually being there it's hard to say what else might be wrong. Good luck and be sure to let us know what you find. Wayne

This may sound like a dumb question , Is it possible the emergengy stop got tripped ?

I just looked in a Motor's Truck Manual, it doesn't give a running pressure but says the by-pass will open at approx. 65 to 70 psi if a filter gets plugged and allow the fuel to return to the suction side of the pump. I would think the pressure should be somthing over 50 psi, but that is just a guess..... ....Les

Normal fuel pressure on those old detroits is 30-70 at full rpm, less at low rpm They are not real touchy about it as long as it is atleast 30 at top rpm/full load. Make sure the fuel rail in the head has all the air out of it so you get fuel from the return line. The return line fitting in the head should have a small restrictor orfice or be a spring loaded check valve, make sure they are not plugged. As Les said, make sure the emergency shutdown flapper in the air box on the inlet side of the blower is not tripped shut. I once saw a guy spend 2 days trying to start one when someone accidently(or purposly) tripped that emergency flapper shut cutting off the air supply to the engine. Lotta smoke, but no run :)
