Take a Peek Please?

Guys,

I'm starting my little power steering add on project. Got the Char-Lynn parts from a salvage yard.

First order of business is to remove this coupler from a piece of shaft that has been torched off. Pin (kinda like a wedge pin) does not go all the way thru.

What's the best way to attack this one? Grab 'er with the vice grips and beat on it?

Thanks for your advice,

Allan

Hi Bill,

Not much. We run this home-based business and somebody has got to watch things. I'm usually here at the desk at 3am and try to shut 'er down by at least 7 or 8 at night. Last night was heavy; shut the door at 11pm; a new subcontractor came on at 3 this morning and needs coaching. UGH! It's just like milkin' cows without the cows. :>(

Nice part is tho, that my shop is 4 feet away and I can sneek in and outta there once in awhile. :>)

Which plane ya gonna tinker with today?

Allan

At work now. I will hopefully finish up the annual inspection on the J5 Cub. I have a student I need to send to Burlington for his check ride in about 20 min. Then I want to blast a few Regular parts. I have a lot of paperwork to do. I hate paper work. There will be rain for the next few days so I will get a shot at flying my pen awhile I am sure. Good dy to you Allan! It is nice having the shop close isn't it? When I was on the farm it was 1/4 mile away. now I open the door and PLAYTIME! I hope I get this sent. Last time my early morning finger hit "Reset"

Allen, drill all the way through size of hole in rollpin. Heat till red, let cool, try to wiggle with visegrip, if that don't work then drill back the other way with bit the size of rollpin. Maybe when you hit pin you can drive out with punch. Replace with rollpin size of coupler. Good luck

I would weld a good piece to it, and try to get it to turn...

Good Luck...

That looks like fun any way you could weld something on shaft and use a slide hammer with other end in vice.

Allan;

Thought you would be done by now!! Heat it try to work some WD 40,Liquid Wrench or Kroil or some other stuff in there. Mabe then you can work it out with vise grips.

Good luck and have fun.

Yepper,

Dat's what I did. Whatever it was, it 'taint there now. Gonna soak the gizmo over night and see if I can budge that shaft next. I'm a thinkin' that the old Snap On power chisel might hit 'er with a big flat-nosed bit and make 'er cry "I give". :>)

We shall see what we shall see,

Allan

Allan,I have done power steering conversions on a couple of IH's using pairs of small#50-60 sprockets with double roller chain to couple them. Makes a simple reliable coupler that will compensate for a bit of misalignment.
