2WD to MFWD conversion?

Ok. Stop laughing, but here's my thought...

I love my 2WD IH 584. Solid machine, reliable, strong, but I really need MFWD. I've been looking around for a used MFWD tractor, but I'm not really finding the right machine locally.

They made the 584 in a MFWD version, and after looking at my service manuals, I realize there appears to be three primary pieces that differ between the 2WD and MFWD version: a gearbox, the drive shaft, and the "ZF" front axle. I don't know if these parts are still available, but if they are, is it rediculous to think I could change my tractor from 2WD to MFWD? Even a few thousand $$ investment would be worth it at this point.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi folks!

I did indeed find a blank round plate, about 8 or 9 inches round, maybe 8 or so bolts holding it on, right on the side of the transmission, just forward of the right rear axle, and right under the place where the engagement control lever goes. If the proper gear is inside that plate, then it should go ok. I'll check on parts availability, and talk to my local IH mechanic today and let you know what I find.

Hi Jim,
I don't think it is rediculous. The cost could be though! I don't know much about the IH's, more about Ford, but I would look at the tranny or rear center section of the tractor first. Either one or the other has to support the transfer case. To this end, there must be an arpeture there for the case to mount up. I think Ford actually used different mid sections for 2 and 4 wheel drive tractors. You guessed it. The 2 wheel drives version didn't have the arpeture, or any place to bolt up the transfer case. The other thing to look hard at is the axle mounting points. It may simply be a matter of changing the pivots if they bolt up on both the front and rear. If the rear pivot is cast into the front bolster like the Ford 2 wheel drives, then you would also have to get the FWD front bolster. The last thing would be the drive gear on the tranny output shaft. Your's probably doesn't have that either. So, you have to see what's involved there. If you are determined to go ahead with it, find the guy with the burnt out cab tractors. Buying those parts new from a dealer will cost a pile. $2000 for a bare axle housing comes to mind....no gears, no swivel casings. THat would be about 1/3 of the front parts. Then add a drive shaft, bolster, transfer case. You get the picture. A new tractor would be cheaper. I don't want to discourage you. I love seeing these conversions, but practically speaking, it would be cheaper and easier to widen your search for another tractor. Take care.

Rod

Jim: Why not give CaseIH a call. I'm thinking that front end would have been on new tractors into the 90s. New could be your least expensive route. A lot of the used tractors with MFWD front will have seen many hours of loader work, thus the front ends will have seen a lot of punishment. Wouldn't hurt to know the cost of new if you negociate on used either.

Another item to keep in mind is a substancial number of those tractors with cabs burned I know a wrecker in a relatively small market area, must have had a dozen of those he bought from insurance companies. He told me he bought them thinking, getting them back in operation as open station tractors would be quite easy. It turned out to be more expensive than he thought. His next thought was how many models of IH tractors did the power trains fit. He showed me a few of them, fire had definately been in the cab-fuel tank area. Most of the factory paint was still on the power train, particularly at the front. That was close to 15 years ago, probably most of the parts have been picked up by now, but you just never know, particularly in small market areas.

Hi Jim,

I ran into some surplus new 1990? Chevy 1-ton 4wd front axles for $500. My first thought was for my tractor...lol

If a guy had a need for a MFWD then it would be cost effective.
