I need some help figuring out what is going on with my truck. It is an '89 F-150 with a 300 6 cyl. When I pull my trailer the temp. gauge will go 1/2 way to 3/4 of the way to Hot. Normally it runs 1/4 of the way up. After awhile the temp. returns to normal. This process will repeat itself at random. It occurs more often with the air conditioner on, but will also occur with the A/C off. I have tried different thermostats and I even took the thermostat out, no difference. When I shut the truck off with the temp. gauge 1/2 to 3/4 way to hot (not hot, but getting there) the truck will perculate like a coffee pot. I can watch the water circulate in the radiator. I have flushed the radiator. I have cleaned the outside of the radiator. This morning I put a thermostat back in for winter. Afterward I ran the truck to check for leaks. While it was running I noticed the heater hoses got hot but the upper and lower radiator hoses remained cool. The heater hoses stayed hot on A/C, heat, and off. Could the heater core be plugged and the top stay hot while the engine runs cool? I'm at a loss. Can anyone help? Thanks for the time.

Chances are it's the radiator like others said. I replaced mine last year in my 88 w/ 4.9, manual, for about $150. It is a universal one that has the tranny cooler for an automatic in it. I just put plugs in those 2 lines to keep dirt out. Fairly easy fix.

WOW! Thanks for all the posts. For Caseyc, it is a manual transmission. I took Vern's advice and let it warm up good. All the hoses were hot this time. I could feel hot and cold spots in the radiator. Thanks for the help. I was scratching my head on this one. The old girl has 180,000 so I guess she can have a new radiator. 3 more payments and she's all mine!

One other thing, when you get the new radiator use distilled water in the 50/50 antifreeze mix to prevent a reoccurence of the mineral deposit buildup in the cooling passages.

Ford 350 '91. For no reason temp indicator in dash indicated funny temps; like yours. Don't remember exactly.

Didn't know if it was the gauge or the temp sending unit.

Got a 300 ohm resistor and pulled the wire off the temp sender. Stuck the resistor between the wire and engine block (gnd).

Indicator read about half scale and was steady.

Replaced sending unit. Problem solved.

Question about the heater hoses and radiator hoses. Is it possible that the heater heat loop is outside the control of your thermostat? If so your thermostat could be closed which would explain the cool upper and lower radiator hoses (no circulation due to too low a coolant temp). The heater hoses would be transferring the heated engine coolant that is not hot enough to open th e thermostat.

Going to go out on a limb. Others suggested radiator problem. I say, if the thermostat opens and the engine is hot, natural thermal convection from the hot fluid in the block will cause the cool water in the upper hose to fall back into the block and be replaced with hot water. Granted circulation thru the radiator will help but it will still circulate on it's own.

Good way to check radiator is to first get it warm and then after shutting it off feel the surface of the radiator for cool spots. The cool spots indicate clogged passages in the core. They can't be cleaned because you can't flow cleaner through them. Check Rockauto.com on the net for new radiators priced from $100 up to $230 depending on your particular model. Good people to deal with and fast also.

had an 89F-150 with 302, did the same thing. But it would run normal unloaded, shut it off, then would run hot until it completely cooled, then was ok again. Long story short, radiator was culprit. Flushing was a waste of time and money. Replaced radiator, all ok again.

I had an 88 F-250 that did the same thing. Replaced all of the cooling components except for the radiator and it still wouldn't work. Finally the radiator went so I replaced it. It has not run hot again yet, even when pulling a trailer with the A/C on. I tried the flushing and cleaning of the radiator too and it didn't work. My guess is , the radiator is shot. Don't waste your time getting it recored otr you'll be buying another one soon enough. Look around on the internet and you can find deals. Local parts store wanted over $400 for a radiator and I found one online for $250 witha lifetime warranty...
