A young girl stopped by (16) wanting my services. She is a pleasant girl and rather shy. Her mother and sister died in an auto accident two years ago her father is on dissability with back injuries (still able to walk slowly). What I offer isn't cheap and can't be made cheap by my lack of proffit. I have very high overhead. Anyway I know they can't afford it but dad is willing to starve himself this winter for his daughter and she has these big sad eyes..... I know she will get what she wants either from her dad or me (I am a push over for little girls, no kids of my own) So my hearts on the table and the banker is at the door. What would you all do? I already have one simmilar case working for me on weekends to offset his bill. Maybe work her after school? This help won't negate my expense but I would be getting something. Maybe she could work on my Regular (I knew I could work a tractor into this).

I've been in the same spot a time or 2, as long as you have some "productive work" for her too do. Remember that likely somewhere in your past a helping hand was offered to you also. For about 10 yrs I get a Xmas card from 1 I helped out when times were tough for him. He finished school learned a trade got a good job..

As long as she isn't freezing to death or starving. The kindest thing to do is have her pay for what she gets, no free rides. It will help her in the long run. Don't want to lower her self respect teaching her to be a mouch. Worse yet she may start down that slippery slope of trading smiles and them more and more in order to make a living.

I've never had someone want to trade labor for carwashes but somedays the way I feel it would be a blessing to get the place cleaned up.

Not to change the subject, but the other day I was on I-65, and noticed a Red Dodge Pickup with the Indianer Plate, "Sloroll"... Anyone you know???

Close! I have an unrestored 52 Chevy 3/4 ton (windows in the corner)that my dog lets me drive him around in. It has that licence plate too. I love that old truck. Looks like hell but runs great. The restoreres all want it fixed up, the environmentalists all want it crushed, The city fathers want a muffler on it. Me and Miles (my dog) just lean towards each other and smile as we wave to passing cars.

I fix lawn mowers, do minor house repairs and other things for female friends who have neither the ability or the money to do it. In return I get my truck interior cleaned, my windows painted, help cleaning my basement etc. I get something done I need done and they can do. They feel better because they don't want charity. I think it fair to ask for somthing in return even if it is a minor thing.

>wanting my services.

What's she want?

>work on my regular...

You mean mowing, plowing and discing or adjusting the carb? At our farm we're always short on labor.

My business is rather seasonal and I keep an old tractor (right now a 1926 Regular)in the hanger to fix up when things get slow. It keeps my mind from melting down.

This is a subject that hits close to home for me. In the late 50s wehn I was about 6 or 7 my father crushed 2 vertabrae in his back. The Dr. said he would never work again, and probably not even be able to walk (Dad proved him wrong on both counts) There was no such thing as food vouchers, Medicaid, etc. at that time. Things were pretty tough, and I don't know how we would have gotten by with out the help of friends and neighbors. Neighbors helped out with the farm, local grocery store owner let us have credit on items we needed, and Dr. cared for us on promise of pay later. We have never forgotten that and have passed on the help to those who truly needed it anywhere we can. Like you, my faith has helped, both with my problems and my responce to others problems.

I had the same thing happen, but not a young girl, just a guy I know. He had no propane. I needed no help at the time, but I cannot see a person I know suffer if I can help. He offered labor if I would help with his propane. It kinda put a cramp in my checkbook when I did not need that hit. I feel like maybe if I am in a bind sometime, it will come back around. As the saying goes, "you reap what you sow." We all know where your heart is, so we all know the outcome on this one. Have her do cleaning at the shop, paperwork, etc. It may not save you much money, but it will give you more time for yourself to do other things to recoup the expense of the work you do for her.

Mornin' Bill,

Forget the big sad eyes.

Even if it were the local blacksmith, it doesn't hurt us to help people out when they are hurting and when they are in dire need; it defines who we are and it defines our character.

I suspect you have got where you are today by your obvious very straight backbone. Give and you'll one day receive ten fold.

Just my view,

Allan

Glad to get confirmation on that. And it has come back to me, I think more than ten fold. I have been blessed. The service has been settled in my mind too. That because of my spiritual beliefs. Now, because of my political beliefs should I offer or mandate the after school job? I know there are people that will say it is not my call but I don't want a young person growing up thinking all they have to do is promote hard luck and get through life free. I am trying to think it may be more important to her when all is said if she does this, or at least thinks it was on her own? Believe me I will do it for nothing but will it be good for her in the long run? the job would be days-end sweep up and light cleaning.

Bill,

I don't wanna let the dogs outta the pen, but I'm an old rascal, been everywhere and have just about have seen it all.

I think you are right on track with your thinking, especially in this case.

The trouble is, and more so with the young pretty girls, is that they pick up very early on in life that a little pout or a big smile will get them just about anything they want and without their really having to do anything else in return, other than bat those eyelashes and roll those big eyes.

In my opinion, part of your responsibility is to help form her young character in this instance as well. Nothing degrading or disrespectful mind you, but just a token repayment of your reaching out to help her when she was in need.

Again, just my view and stated as such,

Allan

Do you realize how good you could make that young girl feel knowing she is paying for what she is getting and not getting a handout.

Thanks guys. I guess the dedcission wasn't all that tough upon reflection. I pondered all day yesterday, slept on it last night. More worried people would think me stupid or mean rather than focus on what was right. Bill
