Can anyone tell me what year(s) the 601 ford tractor was produced and what would be a good retail for one in great shape

Ford 601 series was produced from 1958 to 1962. It was available in several different models in either gas or diesel. Price will depend on condition of course, but also on which model you're looking at and which options it has. A link to a site describing the various models has already been provided, but I'll give my "fwiw" opinions on the differend models.
611: barebones utility tractor with Select-o-speed trans. No 3 point hitch. pto optional. Not too useful.
621: barebones with 4 speed trans. no 3ph. pto optional
631: 4 speed with 3ph and pto. no proofmeter (tach)
641: 4 speed with all normal equipment and gauges
651: 5 speed trans with single clutch (trans pto)
661: 5 speed trans with dual clutch (live pto)
671: Select-o-speed trans with single speed independent pto
681: Select-o-speed trans with dual speed independent pto

Unless you are willing to religiously service and adjust the select-o-speed trans you should probably stay away from the 611, 671 and 681. When they work right they are really nice, but regular maintenance is a must. I would prefer a 661 because of the live pto. Power steering was optional and is a nice feature. A Sherman aux trans was optional from the factory on the 4 speed models. $4200 is not a killer deal but if it's really nice and is equipped well, it's not a highway robbery price either.

dawg, they started production of the 601 in 1957 and I thank it ran through 1962. The price would depend on the location you live in. I live in south east Tennessee and they will sell for about three thousand to thirty six hundred and the ones that are completely restored will sell for a lot more.
That is a good tractor and I think you will like it. I have one that my farther bought new.
