I´m looking for a tractor and I see ads that say it smokes or it smokes a little. What are they really saying about the condition of the engine? Should I pass on those tractor ads? Thanks
Bill

If you went down to your local auto parts store and invested about $20 in a compression gage, you could eliminate the tractors with ring and valve problems from those that just "smoke a little." They are not difficult to use on most tractors and a little research with the search key on this forum and many other sources on the the net will give you all the instructions you need.

Almost all old tractors smoke some. Some because they sit most of the year with out running, others because they are old but still good. I have 10 of them I use all the time and all of them smoke if I haven't run them in a month or so but clear up after they get warmed up.

Not necessarily. But maybe. It could mean the rings are worn, valve guides worn. Buthow much does it smoke? How much can you live with? Doesit run good, strong? Take righ hold when you take off in high gear? How much are you going to use the tractor? If you are planning on putting a lot of hours on it, really using it to farm, well then maybe you had better pass on it or at least expect you may want to overhaul it and the price should reflect the work needed. On the other hand if it runs well and you aren't planning on hundreds (or thousands) of hours a year, well maybe if it doesn't smoke too much it would be OK for your use. You have to look at the situation and make a decision.

thanks for the rely, I have 40 acres and plan to do small scale farming and maintenance tasks. I have also looked at the ads for tractors with stuck motors, considering the price differednce would one be that much worse off buying one of those as comared to one that smokes, given that both might need a motor rebuilt. I know there are no hard ad fast rules, but what does the "usual" rebuild run so as to have a rough estimated to use when looking at the ads for tractors? Thanks Bill

Generally speaking you are always farther ahead to buy a running or loose tractor rather than the stuck one.

Depending on the engine and if your going to do it except for machine work, $500 for an aftermarket major rebuild kit and $200 to have the crank and valve seats ground and guides installed. If the cam needs work, another $100. Could be a little more or less. You could run into cracked block or warped head. You never know. If you've got a shop, go for it.

Well most of the stuck engines need a major rebuild which is say around $1500 or more. But for what you need one that smokes a little will last you probably as long as you can sit on its seat. So maybe you need to add oil off and on, thats no big deal. I buy and sell tractors just to have some thing to do I'm retired/disabled and I have found that in most cases a little oil burning/smoke is some thing you can live with. I have 2 for sale right now and a friend has 1 for sale.

Old,

I like your reasoning. I restored several to get that done (been there, done that) and seems like any more, I weigh the odds of what needs fixin, how important is it to the overall health of the machine, how much does it cost me in frustration, what functionality have I lost, and what would it take to correct it?

Since my "seat time" is also limited, don't get as worked up about is as I used to. Maybe when I retire in 33 more work days, I'll have time to have an attitude adjustment so that, as you said, I'll have something to do. Naw, wife has it already mapped out. Maybe in 10 yrs I'll cut thru the honey do list.

Hey for once some one agrees with me on some thing lol. I have one tractor that as far as I know still has the same rings it had in it when it was new, a JD-B 1935, it smokes and does use oil but it only gets run once in a while and might even do a little work once a year and a show but thats all its is run so I figure why put new in when it does what I want like it is. And who else can say they have a tractor that old with factory rings etc in it.
