Thanks to all that responded. After looking at your responses and my call to the local New Holland dealer, the 3 pt log splitter would not have worked very good with my Ford 1710 due to pump volume. Dealer stated that the ram would take way too long and I might die from exposure before I get the 1st cord cut, Ha Ha. Any truth to that?

Yes, pump volume is important most logsplitters that are designed correctly have what is called a double pump circuit. These can be found in a Grainger catalog. To put it simply a large volume pump extends the ram quickly to the log and when the ram sees pressure the large volume pump is bypassed and the small volume pump does the final part of the stroke and splits the log.

GPM is everything. I, too, have a small hydraulic pump tractor. Instead, use a screw splitter on the PTO very successfully. No problem with power and run the engine no more than 1500 rpm.

Some here have managed to stick a hand or some other body part into the screw. For them, it was too dangerous.
