The wife and I are thinking about doing away with our big satellite dish and go to the small dish. We have had our big dish since about 1977, with no complaints. We are losing some channels now, unless you upgrade to a digital box at about $399.00, or we can go to the small dish with free installation and 60 channels for #29.99 per month.Has anyone have any pro's or con's about Dish Network? I only have one problem with Dish Network is I watch the Western Channel alot with the old westerns, to get it on the small dish I need to order the 120 channel package for about $49.00 per month, way to many channels for us, we don't watch enough tv to get that package. Thank you for any reply's on this..... ..

I have had Dish Network for several years and like it just fine. For the programming I get, it costs about the same as cable would if I lived in town--however I don't expect cable to get to my area in my lifetime.

You didn't mention how much your programming on the large dish system costs per month. I haven't heard much about large dishes for years, but my brother in law used to get a WHOLE BUNCH of channels at no monthly cost at all when he had a big dish. Now this is a while ago, and maybe there is some system to collect fees now. I remember reading that some channels were going to be scrambled and a descrambler would be needed to watch them.

If you can get the programming you want on your existing large dish at no monthly cost, it wouldn't take many months to make up for the cost of the new digital box. I would certainly stick with the large dish in that case.

The other thing I would worry about is that if your large dish has been out in the weather since 1977, probably some of the parts could be wearing out. Plastic parts especially get brittle and go away in the sun. And I would wonder how easily you could get parts for a 1977 system if you needed them.

The Dish antenna is mounted in a stationary position. There is no electrical/mechanical gadget to move the dish. Once you point it at the geostationary satellite, you are set. That satellite broadcasts all the channels, so you don't have to try to locate other satellites like you probably do with the large dish.

The only problems I have had have been weather related. I have had coverage go out in heavy rain and snow storms and in wet heavy snow, the snow sometimes sticks to the dish and blocks the signal. When it does that, I melt the snow by spraying water on it with a garden hose I keep inside so it doesn't freeze.

Before deciding to go with the small dish, I would suggest that you carefully look at the channels offered by Dish Network for the various monthly prices. My guess is that you will not be satisfied at the $30 level. We weren't.

The Dish Network system is a good one....but it will cost you. Good luck, hope I have helped.

We are in the same situation with our C-band dish; lost most of the West-coast feeds and many other channels are going digital..... Can't decide whether to invest in a digital receiver or go to one of the small dishes. Don't think I'm ready to give up our big dish yet.....the (older) 920 receivers are $200-300 on ebay; the current 922s are as you stated (or more). If you go with Dish Network, how about posting back and letting us know what you think..... .

Thank you everyone for your input! I have heard alot about RFD tv but have never seen it,can hardly wait to see some tractor shows. It would be nice if someone started a good tractor restoration show, instead of motorcycles and old cars, for some of us it would be a nice change of pace!!Thanks again guys for the info, and I will have all the channels I get wired into my shop,so I can watch a little something while working on my projects!!!

I have Dish and have no problems with reception except in heavy rain. Had Direct TV before, which did the same thing. My favorite channel is RFD-TV. Lots of good tractor shows and programming tailored to rural folks.

I've had Primestar, then Direct, then Dish. Dish is fine. And you shouldn't lose signal every time it rains. I only lose it when it's real heavy weather and then it's never for long.
They just recently added the Sirius music channels. I spend a lot of time listening to them. Of course all but a few are stuff I have no interest in. I run it through my Bose Wave Radio. Sounds great.

If you live in a region with unstable weather i.e., Florida you may find the Dish a little agrivating. Every time it rains the signal is lost. The basic programing package includes mostly junk with the exception of the History, Discovery and some news stations. If you enjoy I Love Lucy, Home Shopping viewing and as few dozen music stations, you'll love it. Just in case all you are planning on is the basic package, hold on to your pants. Their marking people will drive you nuts trying to get you to expand to the million channels of absolute crap 'till you cave in. Many of the special package movies you can find at Wal Mart for $5.00.

I have both and find both have good qualities. Just to let you know. I checked the regular analog packages at skyvision.com and found if you get the Copper Pak with an a-la-carte western movies channel you'll pay about $30 per month. I guess it depends what you really want to pay for entertainment.

I've used DISH since the first day they hit the street. I highly recommend it.

I didn't know you could even get programming on big satellites anymore...

I have dish network and don't have any complaints other than I spend too much time(about 8 hours/wk) in front of it. In terms of resolution and reliability, it's very good.

Our bill is 26 bucks a month and they tend to send us a free movie certificate every three months. Guess they're tryin' to get us hooked on buying movies off it.

I went from a big dish to dishnetwork about 4 years ago. Like others said the only problem with reception is during an extremely heavy rain. The one thing that I don't like is that there is no alacarte programming. On the big dish I really enjoyed speedvision. With Dnetwork I would have to buy the sports package to recieve it. I have absolutely no use for professional sports. They have some great deals to get you in but once you are there it's no free ride anymore. They have a great new receiver that has a TIVO like feature built into it. If I were a new customer it would be mine for free. Since I just want to upgrade they want 400 bucks for the thing. They define new customer as someone not havinf their service for six months.
