Farmall H woes

I'm working on a Farmall H that has not run well for a long time. I think the problem is isolated to improper valve timing. My father and I determined that all valve openings and closings were advanced approximately 20 crankshaft degrees. Because of this, we thought that the camshaft gear must be incorrectly aligned to the crankshaft gear. When the timing cover was removed, we found the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft gears correctly matched. Is it possible that the marks on the camshaft or crankshaft gears are incorrect? If so, what is the correct setting. The tractor is a 1942 model, serial # 101071 X3
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Tell us how it is running and we can probably make a diagnosis or two. The valve timing being 20 crankshaft degrees off would probably still run smooth enough provided that the ignition and carb are OK, and valves/rings are providing a good seal. But it would be down on power quite a bit. Let us know what it's doing....

The tractor runs real rough, backfires, and requires the use of the choke to keep it running. I have another related question. When the valve cover was removed, the rocker arms were angled upward. The adjustment on the rockers is out almost the whole way. I can also push the valves open easily with my thumb. After seeing this, I pulled the valve cover off of another H and found that the valve stems on the "good" H are a 1/2" shorter than the valve stems on the "bad" H. I'm beginning to suspect that all the problems are being caused by a set of incorrect valves. Does this make sense? Do valves with different stem lengths exist for the H? Thanks again, Steve

Hi Steve,

Sure it is possible, but what is your tractor doing? What are the symptoms?

Steve,

If your valve timing were off, it would show as a compression issue.

Not necessarily. Advancing around 20 degrees will close the inlet early, but at cranking speeds would probably not make a great deal of difference to cylinder compression.
