Just somthing I've always wondered about... when replacing a head gasket, how are you supposed to do a good job of cleaning up the deck of the engine block without knocking dirt down into the cylinders and the passages that the pushrods come up through?

Oil, water, and pushrod passages I've always worried about and plugged with rags or something soft and pliable. And maybe I should worry more about the cylinder bores than I do, usually just a rag. But in any event, before I unplug anything, I put a straw in the end of my smaller shop vac and seal it good with 240MPH (duct) tape and suck minute particles with the straw, especially around the rings - little stuff always finds it's way in the gap between the bores, pistons, rings. Clean rag to give the bores a wipe. Makes the shop vac sound like it's gonna implode, but so what, it's cheaper to replace one of them if does. Haven't had a problem yet.

Mark-In,
I never used the cardboard trick, I knew an antique car guy that did that. he was real picky on one of his engines. shop vac with 12 inch piece of heater hose worked fine.

Just before installing the gasket put some oil on the cylinder walls turn the engine to just about the top, then back down the small bits you missed will be trapped in the oil. Then wipe the oil out along with the stuff you missed. Works for me, Stan

Draw circles on thin cardboard {cereal box} with a compass a tad larger than the bore. cut em out as best you can. slide em down half inch or so in the bore. if you didn't do a good job on the cut out part, then a little wheel bearing grease will seal them up. when the block clean up is done, use a shop vac to suck the crud off the cardboard. this may sound like a lot of work but not as much as trying to get the crud out of the cylinders.

Rags and certain plastic drink cups will work if cut down then lots of air to blow every thing you can out.

Fill them with something removeable and which will catch any bits. Rag and grease come to mind as useful items.
