Rim edge repair

Have a 38" spin out rim that is in very good shape (tire is off) except...one edge where the tire bead is (the surface facing you if you're looking at the side of the tractor) is rusted thru in places around the rim. There is hardly any surface rust on the rest of the rim so I think its worth fixing. Has anyone had any luck fixing these by welding "patches" inside/outside around?? anyone tried to make these "bands" to patch with?? THANKS!!

Done it both ways cheaper to just go find a good used rim and be done with it,the old junk rims people buy them for fire rings to roast hot dogs.

I have welded some wheels in this manner, and run them tubless at that, but I would probably have been better off just replacing the wheel. They invariably seem to fail again or develop leaks. Once corrosion sets in, it can be hard to beat. If this is on something that you are working, then I would at least price a new wheel. If not, or it's just a project, then try welding and patching. Just make sure the welds are clean and strong. HTH.

Is there enough metal left to support the pressure against it from an inflated tire? I repaired some holes in the spin-out rim on my 801 with JB weld. Or course this was on the part of the rim the contact the tube, not the tire..... .....E. Ray

As long as you have another rim of the same diameter that can provide good patch material, and you cut back to good metal on the one you are patching, and do a decent weld on the inside and outside of the patch- there is no reason why it should not hold. Grind the welds smooth so there is no abrasion on the tube, and the outward appearance is smooth.

I have seen where rims have been widened by cutting them all the way around, adding a steel band, and welding back together.

I suppose you could find another rim the same size, you could cut all the way around, aways inside the bead on both rims, and take the good bead flange and weld it to the other rim.

Just remember, though, the TREMENDOUS force of the compressed air in a tire! If your "patch" or weld fails, it can be DEADLY!
