Hi Mark,

Either tractor would pull a 5 foot hog fine. However, the 800 is a much stronger tractor (I believe it is close to 50 hp and the 8n is around 35.) The only problem with your choices is the lack of live PTO. Live PTO keeps the shaft spinning with the clutch in.

And follow Sid's advice on the override clutch if you do not have live PTO.

University of Nebraska tested the Ford 8N. The test of 1050 showed 25.49 belt horsepower. Drawbar HP is typically a bit less than belt. Apparently they did not test a model 800. An 841 tested in 1958 produced 43.1 belt HP.

All the 800 tractors will test about the same - 820 - 871 models. An 860 or 861 will have a live pto. Lesser middle numbers will not, an graeter middle digit will have live pto with the sometimes problematic SoS tranny.

Any of the 800 series tractors is a better machine than an N - more power, live hydraulics, the possibility of 5 speed, llive pto, power steering.....

I used a Ferguson TO 20 with a 5 ft mower. This tractor may be just a little stronger than the 8N. In heavy stuff I ran out of power. I got a MF 203 with a 3 cyl Perkins diesel. With it I can run a 6 ft mower. The perkins will bog down a little in real thick green stuff, but will do almost everything I need it to do.

Of the two the 800 would probably be better. If you get a tractor without some type of live PTO be sure to get an overunning clutch for the PTO. It is my opinion that live PTO is much better for a number of reasons.
