There is a big fire raging at the Yankee Air Force Museum in Ypsylanti Willow Run airport right now. This Museum houses some of the planes used during WWII and is the place where 8700 B-24 Bombers were built during WWII. Hope it is old buildings and not those old irreplaceable aircraft.

It is always sad when I hear of one of those old planes crashing, or being lost in a fire. The pilot almost always dies, and the plane is a total loss. Being an ex Navy radial air craft engine mechanic (got out in 68) There is something about those radial engines being brought to life, I will never forget the sound. I worked on the P5 M patrol planes. These were large twin engine sea planes, that could only land on water. We had 12 in our squadron. Of all these planes there is only one left.

I agree, I hope whatever is burning is something replacable and not the planes. There's just something about the old prop planes that the modern jets lack. Maybe it's just the mystique or romance that watching old movies gives these planes, I don't know, but I can watch jets fly over the house day in and day out and even though their "cool" they don't hold my attention like a prop job does. I heard something the other week when I was working in the shop and went out to see what it was. I had to do a double take, it was a B-29 with a B-24 Liberator right behind her. After I realized what they were I remembered hearing about a show somethwere near here, but I didn't know where or I would have been there. Seeing these old planes still flying after all these years and knowing the time and love that was put into restoring them.....NOW THAT'S COOL!!!!

Evidently the B-29 and B-24 were leaving the Winston-Salem air show. They arrived there a day apart. A B-25 made several passes over the field at about 200 feet height and about 200 mph duirng the show- same with an A-26.

Wayne, were the part of the Confederate Air Force show ?? I think they changed the name to be Politically Correct.... They fly a B-24 & B-29 in here for a few days once a year. Well worth a few dollars to see.....

the only flying 29 belongs to the "commemorative" air force aka confederate air force out of texas with chapters ( WINGS) in several states.

Funny it didn't make our six o'clock news in Saginaw and the news was even late because of the games.

The News reported this morning that the fire took all but three of the airplanes which were stored in a huge wooden WWII vintage hangar. It is a huge loss as many people have donated their time and money over several years in not only finding and recovering these planes but also in the restoration effort of these old aircraft.

It appears that the fire started sometime between 6:00 and 7:00 PM on Saturday. They are trying to find a cause for the fire.
