Tire and rim sizes - who *really* knows?

I need to replace a rusted rim. It's on a 1964 Ford 4000 row crop and is the 4 slotted plate power adjust type (I don't know how important that is). The tire is labelled: `14.9-28 on 13" rim`. However, the existing rim width is 11" at the bead. An OEM or aftermarket replacement rim is not available, so I cut out the 4 slotted plates to weld to a blank rim. The biggest rim that will still allow the plates to be attached is a 12" rim. My tires are still good, so I'd prefer to use them, obviously.

So, does anyone know...

Will these tires be ok on a 12" rim?

What tire size *should* be on this tractor?

Has anyone had any luck with this rim transplant operation?

Thanks for the help.

You can go one inch over or under size on a rim- using the old size markings from several decades ago. They were all in even sizes- no decimal points. Your 14.9 tire WAS a 13 inch tire by those standards, and would 'fit' a 12, 13, or 14 inch rim. 14.9 represents the 'bulge' of the tire, not the rim width. (Maximum cross-sectional width). If your existing rim is 11 inches, the tire is not right, but a 12 inch rim would work, using the max spread of one inch beyond standard.

The manual that I have shows the 4000 came with 12" rims as standard ( 11" were optional ) The flat plate wheels are "power adjust" style.
New 12" X 28 power adjust are available from "Gempler's" 1 800 382 8473 ( I can't post a link ) and maybe other places.
I hope this helps you.

According to my old printed Goodyear Farm Tire Handbook (available on line these days) in the table "Approved Rim Contours" it says: 14.9-28/14.9R28 Recommended rim W13, Alternate rim W12.

The proper tire for a 11" rim would be a 12.4-28. I had an 8N once with extra wide tires on the original rims. They were old, gray, and hard. And it cost the tire man lots of blood and sweat getting them off.

The Ford parts book should mention the rim dimensions, perhaps the owner's manual mentions the rim options. There could have been several factory options.

Most tractor tire books do have a list of approved rim contours.
