Long time ago before I got my red ford running reliably the neighbor said I could jump start 6v from a 12 system. "It don't hurt em", he said.
BS or truth?

It doesn't hurt the starter. You can jump start the starter, directly to the starter.

If you get any other circuts involved, you can hurt that.

its best to put a timer on it to charge maybe an hour a day , even a trickle charger will boil the water out of your battery if it is left on charge constantly

Call me nuts, but we have a Schumacher battery charger that shows on one position being 6V-40A
12V-20A
don't know why, but it does, and when I charge a 6 volt battery, it does 'er.

chez,

Your best bet would be to go to your local Wal-Mart and pick up one of their trickle chargers. They cost around $19.00 and have a switch on them that allows you to maintain either a 6 or 12 volt battery. I have a couple of them and they work great.

You CAN charge a 6 Volt battery with a 12 Volt charger, if needed.

Put a headlamp bulb in series with one of the leads for fast charge, or use a low-wattage dash light bulb for slow charging.

Using a 12V charge on a 6V battery will result in excessive charging current, cause a lot of the water in the battery to boil off and possibly damage the plates in the battery.

I may be mistaken but a 12 volt chager will cook most 6v batts.

Right, a 12volt charger will cook a 6v pattery if left on too long. Putting a bulb or other resistor in series will only prolong the process, when battery gets charged, and current drops thru bulb, then voltage across battery increases, and battery still cooks! Get a 6 volt charger/maintainer.
