Here in west-central Indiana, Mine and most of the neighbors are making 70 to 75 BPA. Test weight is a little low. Our best yields ever. Jim.

Just wondering how much does a bushel weigh?

With cranberries we measure out in barels (bbls) which are 100 lbs.

Industry standards I believe are Corn 56 lbs @ 15.5%
Soybeans 60 lbs @ 13%
Wheat 60 lbs @ 13.5%
Barley 48 lbs @ 13.5%

CBBC, Bushels per acre is only an initial measuring stick. Test weight and moisture content then determines what a bushel will actually weigh. After that the bushel is rated downward for foreign material such as chaffe, weeds, pods, cobs, etc. Then wheat and some other grains are rated downward from that depending on the level of vomatoxin, and other diseases or fungi. Each load is tested at the elevator, and the weigh slips reflect all the pertinent variables. The price paid per bushel is paid against the established contract standard when all the variables are factored.

Finally got 60 acres cut, been having some hydraulic problems with the combine. On sandy gravel in extreme northern In (South Bend area) and surprisingly they yielded 46 bpa! Last year we averaged 27 bpa. Curious as to what our muck and clay do. Heard of near 70 bpa over by Bremen on the heavy clay and richer soils. Wish I would have contracted more than 3000 bu for that $7.62, argh!

We probably need at least another week before we harvest any Soys, and I"d say we have a lot of 70bpa soys but the problem is that we had a lot of replants due to wet spring. Then nearly 500 acres out of 2200 was planted after July 4th. With no rain after the 4th, the plants, especially on the light ground are short even though they are well podded. Many of the full pods are within 2 inches of the ground. The challenge will be to save from 15% to 20% potential left in the field. That will make 70bpa soys 50bpu at best. I"m not talking doom and gloom, just facing reality.

We've been averaging around 50 bu/ac. Had one field that ran at 68. Yield monitor was showing 72 in the middle of that field. Lowest average so far was one 35 acre field that only ran at 32 bu/ac. Our double crop beans might not even make enough to pay the fuel cost on the combine. (Late summer drought) A friend in the middle part of Indiana is reporting one field over 90 bu/ac! (They have WAY better soil than we do "down south") John
