I know, here we go with the off topic stuff again. But here goes. I am currently on dial up service, and up to about two months ago I had nothing to complain about. Just about two months ago my local phone company began installing new phone lines, fiber optic I think, and ever since my service has steadily been getting worse, to the point that about two weeks ago the service got to the point where I could NOT connect more often than I could, in fact I have tried about three times now to make this posting and everytime I lost the connection just as I was ready to submit. I am ready to try a direct satellite link, but I have no idea who offers this service, or how to contact them. Any info is appreciated.

Start by finding out if the problem is in your house or with the telephone company. There should be a standard connection inside the little box on the side of your house where the telephone line comes in. Get a long enough telephone line to run a temp connection to your computer and see if you have the same problem. If the problem clears up, there is a problem with a conneciton in your house and the telephone company won't fix it without charging a bunch.

Of course, even if the problem is the telephone company's, they might not fix it.

Rusty, I just retired from Centurytel as a central office technician. If tey are in the process of installing new equipment they may have moved you to some temporary equipment to free up pairs for a rearrangement. Unfortunately most temporary equipment used for this type of service usually is obsolete and SUCKS as far as internet is concerned. If DSL is available in your area I suggest you sign up for it. It normally costs about $45 to $50 per month, and you only need one line not two. To get it to work they have to go over the lines and get them perfect, and if they are trying to get people on it they will jump through hoops. Then If you don't like it you can always cancel and go back to dialup.

It doesn't seem to take much to mess things up big time. Just last week in Sioux Falls, they were installing fiber optic lines into the newspaper offices downtown, and cut a 9700 pair telephone cable. They are still working on it...even had to call crews down from North Dakota to help.
There they were kind enough to offer telephone and internet connections to anybody that needed it...at the phone company office! That would be pretty handy wouldn't it?

Rusty, dont discount the fact that your modem may be going bad. Years ago, I had a 28k modem act flaky, put my old 14k modmen card back in and it was faster then the 28k! Well, it was about time to jump on the 56k bandwagon so I did. Alwasy connected between 36 and 48k then got a letter in the mail that said the phone co was going to be doing line upgrades. After that It always connected at 52k! Im on DSL now and higly recommend it if you can get it in you area. Distance to switch office is key. No more busy phone lines and WAY faster.

They ruined the service around here while they upgraded to DSL. Thats probably some of your problem.

Had a similar problem about two weeks ago. The phone had background noise and we could hear a digital frequency as well when making calls. Called the phone company and they tested and found the problem to be theirs. A repairman came out a couple of days later and started by isolating the house. Then the line to the post and from there went to a panel about a mile from the house. He found that a wire in that panel was "Rubbing against another and grounding out". He replaced that wire and it has been fine since. We normaly log on at 50 to 53 kbps but when we had the wire problem it was down to 16 kbps when we could get on at all.

If DSL is available it is the best. YES it would help. No conpairason. Same for cable. Check to see if wireless high speed is available as a second choise Third choise is sat. I don't know what your house wireing is but an old time help was to make sure that there is a good ground. If not in the wireing, then from the case of the computer to a water pipe or such. They did the same to me. Had good speed with old copper wires, then fiber optics got worse. Then DSL became available and that is great.

If you mean that you can not dial up a voice phone cause of bad wires, then of course there is no hope. But DSL is a complete different cat. But it must be available in your neibourhood. The best I could get with dial up was 28K and sometimes worse. DSL gives me 250K every time and never a disconect. Wireless is getting more widespread by private companies. Friend of mine got free 250K wireless for letting company put a little antenna on his power pole to cover that area. (line of sight)

Rusty: Do you have cable TV in your area? If so, a cable connection is the way to go. Not exactly cheap (mine is $45.00/month) but no equipment to buy (they own the "modem" and let you use it for "free") and it's WAY faster than dial-up.

Rusty, unless I"m missing something, Have you thought about DSL? When our phonelines were upgraded, DSL became available. DSL actually uses the phoneline, as it actually "rides invisably" on the line. Your phone company sould provide some info on it, and it"s about 20 times faster than dail up. Plus, you can still use your phone.

Try another computer (friends, relatives?).

Several times at the farm, I've blamed the phone company, but then tried another computer or at least a new modem, and got better results.

The last modem I installed about 1-1/2 years ago worked SUPER, but has a tough time connecting lately. I'm going to try a new modem before complaining to the phone company.

I talk to the phone company on a dailey basis, sometimes more than once a day. They openly admit the problem is theirs, and I believe they are doing their best to remedy the situation, but enough is enough.

Hi Rusty,

I'm the same way here. What I do is tell the phone company that I can't recieve calls but can dial out. That gets a repairman out. Then when he shows up I tell him that my calls are being dropped upon dial-up. He then will test pairs until he finds the best set with the least amount of nosie on the line.

If I tell that to whoever takes the orginal call they won't send out a repairman as they only provide voice service, not digital service.

The next best thing I did was upgrade puters to XP-home and 56k V.92. Huge page load speed increase, so much that I forgot about getting satellite. I only get 28.6k at best out of 56k.

We've been using these two-way satellite uplinks from Starband and have had pretty good luck. They'll drive ya crazy for awhile if you don't have a decent firewall. Also, wet heavy snow makes for a bit of hair-pulling.

If I remember right, they run about $760 a pop installed and then $59 a month on a three year contract.

Yeah, I know; the neighbors around here must think we are nuts too!

But strangly enough, you are kinda right in a way. Since we do a lot of business all over the world, we notice that a lot of our stuff gets filtered thru the big boys.

We don't have a thing to hide, but they sure take a look at us every once in awhile anyway. :>)

It's the price for doing business over the Internet, I guess.

Ya know Allan? Can never get rich by working for someone else, and you're still plenty young. I'm gettin' quotes on pole barns, and my brother says, "Think about growth, with outsourcing and stuff, never know what tomorrow will bring". That's a reminder that my higher payin' telephone job may not be there tomorrow, so should be thinkin' about a business of my own back home. Besides, I get tired of a 2.5 hour drive home Friday nights, and a 2.5 hour drive back to Joliet every Sunday night. No family life that way, and nothin' gets done back home. And, the tractors are settin outside, and I saw a white milky substance leakin' out the PTO on my Allis B yesterday. Them tractors and trucks gotta quit settin' out, and I'll be danged if I'm gonna cover them with a made in China tarp from Menards. Contaminated hydraulics. Son of a gun.

But, don't want a visit from the pizza guys either. LOL.

It's only $29.95 per month from the dish folks, DirecTV..... ..... ....Caveaut..... Gotta buy $600 worth of equip first.

The cute little lady that does the ad on DirecTV TV forgets to mention the latter..... convenient I'd say. Must be somewhere in the fine print.

Best I can tell, this is not the same equipment as the TV service. Must be an interactive different freq; hence the need for $600 worth of equip.

They said otherwise it's like $69 per month if you don't buy the equip.

One thing I don't like about direct access is firewalls. My provider currently firewalls a lot of crud. If I went with direct, I'd have to provide for that.

Since I'll be retiring soon, internet traffic will surely increase and I may go that way. But for now, it's too expensive.

Check your connection at the wall plug. I had the same problem and it was caused by corosion on the little wires in the plug. High huminity causes it.
