I have a 1961 j.d.3010 diesel tractor. It makes a chattering noise at the priority valve when idling.Hydraulic oil level is full, powersteering, brakes, rockshaft and remotes work well.Isthis noise normal for this tractor?I plugged a guage in the remote and pressure at idle reads above 2000#.The needle on the guage fluctuates 2-300# never below 1900#.My question is can the priority valve be bypassed i.e.removed of it's contents with no adverse effects other than it's giving priority to brakes and steering in the event of a low pressure situation?THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP!

Your chattering priority valve is likely just reacting to pressure pulsations from a bad main hydraulic pump. If your front pump has a bad valve, piston, or spring in any of it's eight pumping chambers, the output pressure will fluctuate, causing noise downstream.

I would check the spring and spool in the priority valve, also, just to be sure there's not a problem there.

I sure wouldn't remove the priority valve! Sometimes having brakes and steering when you need them is kinda handy!

As Bob said, probaply a worn/marginal pump. Also Myabe sucking in air on the suction side of the pump ?
Just a thought.
