I have a JD two bottom 4B plow that does not plow evenly, the front bottom goes in about two inches deeper than the rear. I have the leveling lever set to the max. to avoid this, but that is not enough. Also, this plow was converted from steel to rubber with each tire a 6.0-16. Does this tire size affect the plowing?
The furrow wheel is steel.

Set the land wheel on a block the same height as what you want to plow. Then set the right or furrow wheel where the plow is level. This should be very close to where the plow will do a reasonably good level job.Do this on a level concrete slab.If you can't set it this way, this should tell you where the wheel sizes need to be changed. Then set the tail wheel where the back is the same plowing depth as the front bottom. You will most likely have to make the final tail wheel adjustment in the field.

Bubba,
Your suggested simulation of field conditions, by raising the land wheel to desired plowing depth, seems logical, and I did that. Keeping in mind that, in my case, both the land and furrow wheel are 600-16(now rubber converted from steel), I was able to level the plow with the leveling lever. However, out in the field the plow barely goes in the ground. I particularly have trouble on the first pass in unplowed soil. I cannot set the leveling lever enough to allow for it. This all is particularly confusing to me considering that in the parts illustration of the original plow it shows the land wheel to be about 6" larger than the furrow wheel.(parts manual shows the original wheels to be steel with the furrow wheel 5.00-26 and land wheel 4.00-32). Leroy verified this condition in his reply, and I appreciated his suggestion as to what tire size I should use. However, I have not yet done that.

There is no tail wheel adjustment on that plow, it is fixed with no adjustment unless you use a torch and cut or straighten a bent part

That plow had 2 different size wheels on it, the right, furrow wheel was 28", about the size of that 6:00 X 16", that the land, Clutch wheel was 32" Most were converted using a 6:00 X 20" (note 4" larger wheel) using that smaller tire will make a woping difference. Find a 7:50 X 16" or even a 235-80 X 16" truck tire and put on, you will find it makes a great difference, the larger truck tires call for a wider rim but for that a 4" rim will work, just be harder to mount, and the furrow wheel is the large wheel on the right front, the small steel wheel on the back is called a tail wheel. the difference between that 6:00 and a 7:50 is 3" and that clutch wheel was orignaly 4" larger so you would still be a little small the 235-80 is a bit bigger than the 7:50
