I have 13 acres of pasture I want to be able to groom 3-4 times a year. Time is easier to come by than cash, but at some point there is a limit. Am looking at old Fords (8N) with a 5 foot brush hog, but am leary of time commitment.

Thanks in Advance,

Kirk

Thanks everybody for the thoughtful responses. I started this since my wife's parents were "threatening" to buy a tractor for us. MY criteria was mid 60's vintage, 40-50 hp, with loader, power steering. This generally would have given live power and hydraulics and been able to do quite a bit of work around here. I was looking for additional "ammunition"

Well yesterday my father-in-law showed up here with a Ford 9N. Awfully generous on their part, but now I have to make the beast usable for us. It starts and runs pretty well, brakes are pretty much non-existent, hydraulics and PTO seem to be working. I agree with some of the posters that for the money he spent you could probably find a more workable tractor, but he liked the idea of having a collectible that he could play with.

I guess I will go haunt the ford groups for a while.

Thanks Again,

Kirk

What kind of GOOD dealers are in your area? When buying a used/old tractor, you still have to go to the dealer for parts every now and then.

An 8N Ford is almost always WAY overpriced for it's value as a tractor. They are CUTE and something that people who don't know any better think of when they think tractor. Not that they aren't ok for somethings, just that you can buy a lot more tractor for a lot less money.

I would suggest they you consider an AC WD or maybe a VAC Case. A good WD will usually bring less than $1000., sometimes a LOTss. It will give you independent PTO and hydraulics, thru the hand clutch, can easily be converted to 3 point and back to snap coupler for a wide range of equipment. You can find trip bucket loaders for a few hundred dollars, and they are a WHOLE LOT BETTER than no loader at all. You won't have power steering but you'll still have a lot of money in your pocket. For clipping pastures I'd suggest a sickle mower rather than a rotary also, but used rotary mowers that are good enough for weeds are sometimes less than $100. and sickle mowers in usable shape are often quite a bit higher. Here in the midwest I have now doubt that a person who looked around a little could put together a good Allis WD with trip bucket loader and usable old 5' brush hog for $1,200 to $1,500. with out much trouble at all.

stay away from the 8n's, no live power not heavy enough for front loader, no power steering. Look for an Oliver 550 or a MF 35 deluxe/135, live pto, live hydraulics standerd and power steering optional. Possibly a Ford but newer than 8n not sure of model. NO sycles around livestock unless you grew up using one around stock. You will cut their legs off along with cats and groundhogs. Not to mention your fingers if you are careless raising and lowering the sickle bar from transport to mowing postition.

No crap here, with my M Farmall,6 ft bushhog,in 4th gear,I can cut my feild, waist high fescue,in about 7 hrs,its 12 acres. If I go back over it say like a month later,I can do it in 5 hrs. Now,the first cutting doesnt look all that great, but after the second cutting it looks good enough for me.I accually could do a third, but it aint worth the time. This is one big open feild, with trees all around my proprty lines.

Width in feet times the speed in miles per hour equals the amount of acres covered in a 10 hour day. Divide by 10 (move the decial point one place left) equals the acres per hour.

This is only about 90% efficiency so it allows some time for turning corners, watering your horse, etc.

For what it is worth.

If you're just clipping the grass off, consider using a sickle bar mower. Much faster, less fuel, and does a neater job than a rotary mower. You should be able to do 2-3 acres per hour. Takes a little more attention adjusting and sharpening than a rotary but that's another excuse to spend time with your toys.

Why don't you sow it in alfala, that way you get paid when somebody else mows it for you after you sell them a standing crop.

We use the pasture for our horses. I just want to keep it neat and the weeds from taking over.

Thanks,

Kirk

Kirk,

Depending on how tough the grass is, you are looking at 10 to 12 hours of steady mowing. If you can haul butt, 7-8 hours.

I'm mowing with a 6 foot, traveling in 3rd or 5th and get about 1 and a half acres per hour. With a 4 footer, I was going just less than an acre per hour. You should be able to do about an acre or just better per hour.

That is open field, no trees to get around, no barns or sheds in the way.

Is this idea of yours to do your own mowing have to do with the cost of hiring it out? I'm charging $40 per hour, man and machine, and have no problem getting jobs.

If you are paying $250 per mowing, you are going to get 10 to 20 mowings for the price of setting up your own operation, depending on the cost of equipment, fuel and maintenance. That's 2.5 to 5 years of not having to do it yourself.

Folks on this site know that I like to mow, so I don't mind getting a weekend in the sun cutting every thing in sight. Some people don't like to do that, or don't have time. They just like to see the pasture looking neat and trim, so they pay me to do something I like to do anyway.

Works out well for everyone.

Hope this helps, UFO Man

Mostly I am trying to justify owning a tractor for the toy value, etc. It would be nice to have a loader occasionally, and not have to fit into my neighbors schedule for mowing (he will mow it for $12/acre ~$160). I know it doesn"t necessarily make economic sense, but I do have to try to justify it in some way to my wife.

Thanks,

Kirk

Kirk,

You can get a whole range of tractors for around $2000, if you don't care how they look. I have an IH B 414 diesel that I paid $1750 for. About $300 in repairs and it runs like a top. That's half what a 8N or 9N costs around here. Added a new rotary mower for $850. Medium duty Kodiak 6 footer. That's less than or equal to what the 8N's cost around here.

I cannot imagine what the appeal of these little Fords is, but they are selling like hotcakes and holding price...$2500 to 3500. I don't get it. I know of at least two Massey Fergeson 35's close by for the same money. That's a better tractor in my humble opinion.

We have horses (6) and a total of 10 acres of pasture, which is in growing season from Valentine's Day to Thanksgiving Day. I mow once during December or January to kill winter weeds.

I cut four acres once every three weeks during the summer and fall to keep the grass energized. The other six acres get cut two to three times a summer and once during the winter. The pastures have different grass mixes which require this type of attention.

I will say this, there is no way I would put a sickle type mower on my tractor around livestock. You can't get the machine stopped fast enough to prevent a horrendous injury to the animal.

Rotation of pastures does work well for cattle and other ruminants, but horses need to range to the food they like and room to move their muscles for extented periods. Ours will romp for an hour or two, cutting figure 8's and racing the dogs. Fences get in the way of that.

For my little place, the tractor is a necessary piece of equipment. I could use a loader from time to time, but not enough that I can't do without or find another way to get the job done.

Good luck, hope this helps. UFO Man

You have a horse farm and you are trying to justify if you need a tractor,,dont even think about it,sorry to be so blunt,,but Ive been there,,get your tractor and a loader with power steering,,I repeat do not cut any corners on these 3 issues,,if you do, I guarantee you will regret it in the future.

Good Luck

LOL If your trying to "justify" the purchase of a tractor with your wife/significant other...then you will have a VERY rough "row to hoe."

you mention a loader. i don't know how much fun it will be mowing 13 acres with a loader on the front, especially without power steering. if the loader can be easily removed, then you don't need to worry about it.

i'm with some of the other posters though, i just like riding on the tractor and mowing. 13 acres would probably make for a relaxing day (for me).

For $2000 or less you could get something like a WD Allis with a sickle mower. Seven footer should do over three acres per hour. Twelve dollars per acre to cut grass? I could get 8 bucks an acre here with a swather or 15K discbine with a 25K tractor in front!

Why not break the pasture up into paddocks and rotate your stock? Then you have smaller sections to mow and the livestock always has fresh grass to feed on. Plus it gives the grass a rest from the animals and a chance to recover from grazing.

We do try to rotate grazing as best we can. The 13 acres is split 5/5/3. Two of the parcels have their own run-in sheds so they work pretty well. The third is the furthest from the barn and is connected to one of the other pastures so they can get into shelter if they need it. If the weather is good and the flys are down we will gate them into the back pasture to try to keep them off the closest pasture.

There are still waste areas that they won't eat and weeds to keep under control. Besides, my wife likes the asthetics of neat pastures.

If fences are good at ground level - could add a couple sheep and maybe a goat or calf to graze with the horses. Wooly weedeaters control plants horses don't eat, still have to cut thistles. Butcher sheep after snowfall, get a couple weaned lambs in late spring for next years graze. If you have high door shed- consider IHC Farmall H or C, A, or numbers 100, 200, 300. If horses are harness broke and you have Amish close by- consider a horse drawn mower for rough weeds control and horse training. RN.

Might want to look for a newer tractor with live pto. 8N dont have that feature.
