Funny how it took a Limey to find the correct American tractor picture LOL! No seriously I am glad ( surprised!) I could help.
The John Deere LA was produced between 1941 and 1946. I am sure if you could pin-point the serial number on it a JD guy on here could tell you the exact date. I seem to remember that the L and LA tractors were one of the few models that actually did not use a a JD engine, but one supplied by Hercules. On the other hand I might be wrong!

The Styled L and LA had John Deere engines, I am not sure about the unstyled L, the 62 that was the predesor of the L I think had the Hercules, The L was rated to do the work of a two horse team with the LA larger and rated equivelent to a 3 horse team. You probably will not find a serial No. plate on that tractor as most have been lost due to the mounting location on the rear axle where every time you got on or of of it you hit that plate with your foot and they got tore off easily, the wheels tell me that you have the larger LA, the L had pressed steel wheels and 22" tires

It didn't work, do a search of the photos, look for John Deere L.

(The EDT comments are a long-standing joke around here about a non-exsisting tractor that does everything... :)

Somewhere on the tractor there is a shiny metal plate or flat sopt with numbers stamped into it. This will tell you exactly what you have to the year it was made.

Most tractors have some letters or numbers on the side of the tin work over the engine or so. Possibly on the front radiator tin, or behind the engine on the tin. This will tell you most of what you want to know.

Color of paint will tell us what make it is, if you can be really specific - bright green, dull green, orange, red, blue, 2 colors....; engine description (4 cyl, 6, 2...) gas or diesel fuel, etc. Type of transmition (number of gears) and so on. Wide front end, narrow front end, size of rear tires, and so on will help if nothing else.

A picture will get it identified instantly here.

Most tractors built from 1930s through the 1960s by all manufacturers would fit your description so far, so we need a little more to go on.

The best thing to do is take a couple of pictures of it and post them on here. I am sure someone on here will identify it in an instant.

Give us something to go on. What color(s) is it? Are the front wheels set wide apart or narrow? What numbers can you find on it? Got a picture? Look to the left under Galleries|Tractor Photos, see anythig that looks like it?

Couldn't be an ETD for a couple of reasons. It is against the law to inherit ETD's and secondly, there is nothing rounded on them. Even the wheels are square. So that puts that theory to rest. Meanwhile, I'm taking mine out for a little cultivating today .... wish you were here.

That rule about not talking about it is for everyone else but not for me (since I have one of the few remaining ETD's). Go into the archives and search out ETD or ESSEX TRI-DIRECTIONAL and you'll have enough reading to last you till spring seeding.
