We've recently purchased 40 acres and need a tractor. Dad wants a new tractor not a used one. The Branson around 40 HP range is affordable but my dad, husband, and brothers know nothing about how well they hold up. Dad found a New Holland 40 HP for about $2500 more that has the hydrostatic system. The Branson has a FEL. Can anyone give me info on which tractor is the better choice or if we should just keep looking?

Thanks,
Cami

What are you going to do on that 40 acres?????

Personally, i think if you plan to farm 40 acres, i'd be be thinking of getting a farm utility tractor, instead of a compact.. A farm tractor is built much heavier than a compact, and with the same horse power it will last longer because of it.

You really need to think about what your going to use the tractor for, as different needs, will need a different class of tractor!!

I'm going to have german warmblood horses and boxers. We'll be mostly mowing with some need for a FEL and some discing and things of that nature. I don't mean to sound stupid, but what would a farm utility tractor be? I was told by a friend at John Deere that a 40 hp tractor was all we should need. Most of those seem to be compact tractors.

It doesn't sound like your going to do much tillage, or expect your tractor to be doing a lot of heavy digging or hauling, or baleing a lot of hay.

A compact holds up very well for mowing and doing light to medium duty chores. The difference in a 40hp Compact, and a 40hp farm utility tractor is in how heavy they are built. Farm utility tractors are heavier, with thicker castings and heavier made internal parts.

Look at a 40hp L series Kubota, it's there compact. For a farm tractor, Kubota makes there M series. Thety look similar, but they aren't.

I have a Agco Allis 4650, it's a 43hp farm tractor, and it's about 1,000 pounds heavier than a 40hp compact. For heavy use, the thicker castings make a tractor last longer, and take the stress better.

Keep in mind, farm tractors rate there hp at the PTO, compacts usually rate there hp at the engine. Although i see they are getting better about that now.

Have you looked at a Mahindra brand tractors?? They seem to hold up very well, and are cheaper in price. They are made in India, and the ones i looked at, were heavier built than the compacts from Korea, and Japan. I keep hearing good things about them.

I purchased a Branson just last week and so far am very happy with it. I think if it is taken care of I should get many years out of it.

I asked the dealer about parts, common parts are next day. Uncommon parts are three days. At this time I think that there are four warehouses across the country.

I too looked at New Holland, Deere, and Kubota. I think Branson is a good value for what you get and the warrantee looks good. Now, will it run for 20-30 years? I guess I will find out.

Some of the things that I was impressed about the Branson are, fenders, hood, and side panels are all steel. The controls are laid out nicely, the platform is nice and open, quick attach loader and bucket, and common service items are easy to get at. The other brands offer pretty much the same features and most of the layouts are good.

As mentioned in another post, Hydrostatics are nice for doing loader and box scraper work. If you plan on doing some harder work you may be happier with a gear drive tractor. The transmission and shuttle shift on the Branson work smoothly as do the same on other brands.

I don’t think you will be unhappy with whatever tractor you choose. The ones I would stay away from are the China built machines. Task Master, Farm Pro, Kioti. All three of these are built by the same company and marketed under different names. The warrantee on these machines is only one year parts and no labor. The dealers around here will not take one on trade as they seem to be plagued with problems. I talked to one owner that found sand in the hydraulic reservoir. Apparently the castings are not getting cleaned out as good as they should be at the factory. The other issue I have heard about is porous castings that weep oil. In both cases the dealer did nothing to help these people out and told them that that is just the way they are. This dealer will not be around for long I am sure.

The Branson is made by Kukje in Korea. Same factory makes the Century. Kukje makes a few models for John Deere.

Take a look Kubota, tell me how many tools you need to do a basic service on it. I can drain and fill the fluids on any NH compact with a 17mm and 19mm wrench. Some require either an 10mm or 13mm to bleed the fuel supply, some don't reqiure that. Every time I service a Kubota, half the toolbox is out, and I need tools to remove panels on many models. There is little or no difference in the amount of electrical garbage on either.

Irregardless of the tractor, New Holland will be around for a long time, can you say the same for Branson? Just the way I look at it. My father bought a NH TN90F and it's been a great tractor. Lotsa dealers too.

What will you be using the tractor for?

Hydros are not good for heavy tillae work. They are handy for lighter utility work, like the loader.

make sure that you look at the warranty. Dont know much about the Branson, is it USA made? The New Holland is a well respected name with a good warranty too.

Neither one are American Made There are no tractors under about 100Hp made in country anymore. Just a test call up the Branson guy and see how long it will take to order in a few common parts. At least you know that NH has a good parts and support system.

NH had a good parts system. HAD, but it's now a far cry from what it used to be. They can usually find the parts somewhere on the continent, but it now takes several days to get some things, as limited quantities of each item are stocked in one warehouse, or in some cases, perhaps only one warehouse in NA will stock a given part. I did a brake job on my 7710, and had parts come from 4 different depots. Just my 2 cents.

A lot of them are assembled in the USA some even make their own componants. Most use an engine from overseas.
